Coalition pledges multiple actions to prepare all Detroit students for colleges, careers

DETROIT - A broad and diverse cross-section of Detroits education, government, civic and community, parent, and philanthropic leaders today released a citywide education plan that calls for sweeping changes to improve the citys schools.

Its goals: By 2020 Detroit will be the first major U.S. city where 90% of students graduate from high school, 90% enroll in college or a quality postsecondary training program, and 90% of enrollees are prepared to succeed without needing remediation.

The Excellent Schools Detroit coalition said it would take multiple steps to achieve these goals, including the formation of a watchdog group to set citywide standards, to creating 70 new quality schools by 2020, to mounting a campaign to bring talented principals and excellent teachers to Detroit's schools.

"This citywide education plan is designed to help all children, whether they happen to attend a traditional public school, public charter school, or independent school," said Carol Goss (President & CEO, the Skillman Foundation), who convened the coalition. "Every Detroit child should be attending an excellent school, period. The status quo is unacceptable and indefensible."
