Push to rebuild city's schools begins with community input

More than 100 residents attended the first ExcellentSchoolsDetroit meeting on Monday night at Osborn High School, which was hosted by Detroit Parent Network. The meeting kicked off the planning phase of the new initiative, which involves a partnership of Detroit's education, government, community, parent and philanthropic leaders. The initiative's goal is to take advantage of a new sense of urgency in the community, results-driven leadership and additional funding for bold initiatives to build better schools in the city.

More meetings have been scheduled during the next two weeks, in which parents, youth, leaders and community members are encouraged to come and share their ideas and concerns in small group discussions. Meetings take place from 6-8 p.m. and include free dinner (5:30-6 p.m.) and child care. The schedule:
Tuesday: YouthVille, 7375 Woodward Avenue
Wednesday: Southeastern High School, 3030 Fairview Street
Thursday: Most Holy Redeemer Church, 1721 Junction Street
Dec. 7: Henry Ford High School, 20000 Evergreen Road
Dec. 8: Detroit Community High School, 12675 Burt Road
