Community assembles to discuss education concerns

Neighborhood education meetingMore than 300 Detroiters from the Brightmoor and Cody/Rouge neighborhoods attended Tuesday night's education meeting. Attendees heard from principals such as Cody High principal Johnathon Matthews (right), students, parents and neighborhood residents about what's going on in their local schools. The good, the bad, the ugly.

The community was encouraged to take next steps, including attending school board meetings, supporting local schools' efforts, talking to friends and neighbors and holding elected officials accountable. Tips for parents included knowing their students' school, expecting and demanding more for their students and seeking out support for college attendance from community partners.
