Community assembles to discuss education concerns More than 300 Detroiters from the Brightmoor and Cody/Rouge neighborhoods attended Tuesday night's education meeting. Attendees heard from principals such as Cody High principal Johnathon Matthews (right), students, parents and neighborhood residents about what's going on in their local schools. The good, the bad, the ugly.
The community was encouraged to take next steps, including attending school board meetings, supporting local schools' efforts, talking to friends and neighbors and holding elected officials accountable. Tips for parents included knowing their students' school, expecting and demanding more for their students and seeking out support for college attendance from community partners. Education meetings continue next week Interested in joining the discussion on how to fix our schools? Mark your calendar for one of next week's meetings. Free dinner and child care will be provided.
Join us for governance meeting Saturday Good Neighborhoods residents are invited to attend the Foundation's second community governance kickoff meeting on Saturday. During the meeting, we'll be defining the purpose and process, sharing research from other communities, lifting up findings from the community listening project and discussing key governance issues. The meeting will take place from 8:30 a.m.-noon Saturday at Martin Luther King High School, 3200 E. Lafayette, Detroit. For more information, please click here.
