2012 Season Opens with Dustin Johnson

How do you begin your 10th season  of offering some of the best opportunities to get "inside the ropes" in the world of professional golf for charity? How about with Dustin Johnson at the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego at Torrey Pines.  We were thrilled to  partner with this great player on clearly one of the most beautiful courses in the world to kick-start our hallmark season.

Our"caddy" John Vigo from San Francisco had a great time with his pal Joe Gandolfo and they both enjoyed the experience with DJ to the max. But, no one could help but not enjoy witnessing the sport of golf saying thanks to one of our brave wounded warriors, Corporal Ryan Rodriguez, USMC. Torrey Pines is a long way from Afghanistan and the daily duties of a Marine, and we were thrilled to assist through Birdies for the Brave - the PGA TOUR military outreach founded by Phil and Amy Mickelson.

As these three men will certainly testify, there really is nothing like spending a day with one of the best players in the world. Assisting families suffering from Fanconi anemia, giving the wounded and brave warriors a thrill of a lifetime at Torrey Pines AND receiving a tax deduction...no words to describe it.

Many thanks to Dustin Johnson, his awesome caddy Bobby Brown, John Vigo, Joe Gandalfo, Corp. Ryan Rodriguez, and Tournament Director Peter Ripa at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Focus on Fanconi

FanconiFanconi anemia is the impetus behind our program. It was the birth of Christian Collins, in August of 1993, and subsequently his brother Calen born five years later that impassioned Caddy For A Cure to attempt to make a difference.

Lynn and Dave Frohnmayer started the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund, Inc. in 1989 to find effective treatments and a cure for Fanconi anemia and to provide education and support services to affected families worldwide.

Fanconi anemia (FA) is one of the inherited anemias that leads to bone marrow failure (aplastic anemia). It is a recessive disorder: if both parents carry a defect (mutation) in the same FA gene, each of their children has a 25% chance of inheriting the defective gene from both parents. When this happens, the child will have FA.

Scientists have now discovered 15 FA or FA-like genes. These genes account for over 95% of all known FA patients. Some patients do not appear to have mutations in these 15 genes, so we anticipate that additional FA genes will be discovered in the future.

FA occurs equally in males and females. It is found in all ethnic groups. The average life expectancy for a patient with FA is 24.7 years, although there are now patients living into their 30s, 40s and 50s.

Though considered primarily a blood disease, it can affect all systems of the body. Many patients eventually develop acute myeloid leukemia (AML) at a very early age. FA patients are extremely likely to develop a variety of cancers and at a much earlier age than patients in the general population. Patients who have had a successful bone marrow transplant and are therefore cured of the blood problem associated with FA still must have regular examinations to watch for signs of cancer.

Please, when considering "caddying for a cure," know that there is a tremendous cause behind your day of fun with some of the greatest players in the world!

Caddy For A Cure expands to Champions Tour

Caddy For A Cure is thrilled to announce that this season we are going to expand our opportunities to the Champions Tour! And doubly exciting is announcing our first opportunity - the chance to caddy for Charles Schwab Cup Champion Tom Lehman at the United States Senior Open in Michigan in July!

Tom has participated with us many times while on the PGA TOUR and was very excited to hear we were now offering opportunities on the Champions Tour, as well. In fact, he suggested we kick off with a really great start by letting some fan have the chance to see golf at its very best with him at the 2012 US Open.

Greetings!

The story is a compelling one.

I was working the Valero Texas Open for Bernhard Langer in San Antonio many years ago. Six young Marines were walked down the range to watch all the players hit balls and to meet those willing to say hello. Each of the Marines had lost a leg - or more. It was a chilling sight for me to see these young, strong, great looking men, knowing full well that their lives would never be the same again.

We were standing next to Frank Lickliter III, and I heard him say, "Just because someone has had an accident doesn't mean that they don't still love golf." Indeed how true that was this day, looking into their eyes of fascination as they watched shot after perfect shot from the world's best, there on the range. My heart was impassioned, and we set out to do even better by getting these brave men and women out to escort our "caddy's" on the PGA TOUR.

To say that this aspect of what we do has changed our lives is a gross understatement. It has introduced us to some incredibly brave warriors who have given so much for us. Of course no one is for a war, but we believe firmly that we must support the warriors.

Come out on one of the three professional golf Tours and "caddy for a cure." We know that you will not only have the time of your life, but you will make someone else's life, as well.

Very respectfully,

Russ Holden PGA
