TOUR Season to Kick Off in LA!
Caddy For A Cure is more than excited to kick off the 2011 season in great form at one of the greatest events on the PGA TOUR, the Northern Trust Open at the famed Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.
Ryder Cup Superstar Luke Donald will be doing the honors of allowing a super fan to come "inside the ropes" and carry his bag around the historic golf course. This lucky fan is Mark Madden, who is coming all the way from the United Kingdom to work with and partner with not only one of the best players in all of golf, but also one of the nicest!
We are extremely humbled and honored to announce that Luke will also be escorted by Sgt. Mike Garcia USMC. Sgt. Garcia was injured in Iraq but is still an avid golfer. We met him at the US Navy Blue Angels Foundation event last September, and he is greatly looking forward to the experience next week at Riviera.

Focus on Fanconi
Justin Barbier was blessed to have an uneventful childhood. He was always small for his age but played soccor, baseball and enjoyed hunting with his dad and grandfather. He has always had an outgoing attitude and been a joy to his family. During high school Justin broke his ankle while riding Dirt bikes with friends. During pre op testing, we found out his platelet count was low, 29,000. Justin was diagnoised with Fanconi Anemia. A genetic disorder that would eventually cause Bone Marrow Failure and Leukemia. It also predisposes him to certain cancers that will be addressed later as they/or if they occur.

We were blessed to have time on our side as 6 years passed before Justin's bone marrow began to show pre-leukemia changes. After much research and praying we chose University of Minnesota Medical Center/Fairview as our transplant hospital. Dr. Wagner is a world reknown FA specialist who has led us on this journey for the last six years and who is leading our BMT team.
Justin was blessed again and had a perfect 8 of 8 matched donor found on the bone marrow registry. All systems are go and they were headed up to Minnesota on July 7, 2007. It is now more than two years later and Justin is in fact doing well. He has recovered from his marrow transplant and is living a relatively normal life. It is extremely encouraging to see FA patients living healthfully well into their 40's through advances in FA Research, and through your willingness to "caddy for a cure!"

Who We Support
The impetus behind the Caddy For A Cure program was an attachment to Fanconi anemia and research for this disease. Added to the funds we receive, we are also honored to give to Birdies for the Brave, the PGA TOUR Caddie Assistance Fund, the TOUR players charity of choice, as well as the TOUR Host site charity of choice. On the LPGA TOUR, we are also honored to give to the LPGA Foundation, which supports US Junior Girls Golf. Our national spokesperson and FA patient who is reason for Caddy For A Cure, is pictured here.

Since its inception within the PGA TOUR, Birdies for the Brave has grown to include
a variety of military outreach efforts, including Patriots' Outpost military hospitality chalets and military celebrations held during tournaments; letter-writing campaigns for the troops; distribution of care packages to troops stationed abroad; awarding an honorary membership at each TPC to the Wounded Warrior Project for the benefit of a local wounded warrior; and a series of fundraising events conducted at the TOUR's TPC Network of clubs nationwide and partner properties. This enables fans, club members, sponsors and the public the opportunity to participate in charity golf tournaments and other activities that directly benefit military men and women and their families, while at the same time play the same sensational golf courses where the world's best golfers compete.

Greetings!
As we venture out to yet another golf season on both the PGA and LPGA Tours, we are excited about what could potentially happen this year. Could it be that this is the year we hear the great news that cancer, all cancer, has met its match and millions of lives will be saved as a result? We sure hope so.
We were at a medical symposium last summer when we heard a presentation from one of the world's leading oncologists who study FA and the high incidence of cancer among FA patients, particularly in the head and neck. 3000 times more likely to be exact. Due to this high rate, studies are being done on the saliva of FA patients and the speaker was so bold, to shake his fist at us, and state "that maybe, just maybe, we may be on to the answer to all cancer." Pretty strong words, but ones that filled us with hope, and courage to continue another year of "caddying for a cure."
Is this your year to "caddy for a cure?" We sure hope so. Yes, you will have a great time, but even greater, you will be working to insure that generations to come will be able to also enjoy the same thrill of being with the best in golf.
See you soon "on the bag!"
Sincerely,
Russ Holden PGA
