GOLDEN MOMENT FOR CHARITY WITH THE GOLDEN BEAR AT THE HONDA CLASSIC
All that is considered good in the game of golf came together during the recent Honda Classic pro-am at PGA National. Unarguably the greatest golfer of all time, Jack Nicklaus, together with outstanding athletes Drew Brees and Dan Marino and popular musician Kenny G, paired together for one remarkable round of golf with the winner being charity.
Texas residents and long-time pals, Steve Hartnett and Stephen Bean, had the day of their life and, as they like to say, were able to check off a "bucket list" of thrills in the game of golf by 'Caddying For A Cure' for Jack Nicklaus for the day.
On their own merit, being amidst recent Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees, Hall of Famer Dan Marino, and world famous musician Kenny G could be overwhelming. Add Jack Nicklaus to the equation and Steve and Steve, both successful businessmen, were like kids in a candy store with glee.
While fun was aplenty, it was most touching to have Fanconi anemia patient and National Spokesperson, Christian Collins, meet Mr. Nicklaus. As our hearts are continually turned with helping fight this horrific genetic disease, it was incredible to watch Jack meet "FA" for the first time. The way Jack handled this meeting was classic 'Jack' - with confidence, warmth, and hope. Christian, and all those watching, will not forget this moment.
When we were making the arrangements for the day, we were most pleased to receive a special request. After learning that we support the Wounded Warrior Project, Mr. Nicklaus asked if we could arrange for a wounded warrior to be part of the group for the day. We immediately thought of our dear friend, Sgt. Andy Butterworth, aka, 'Butter' for the job. Although Butter lost his right leg after being blown up in Iraq in 2004, he still loves his golf and was honored to be a part of this duty. To be able to see two of our heroes together in one setting was indeed a testimony to this great game of golf.
Many of you will remember Steve Hartnett from setting the all time record for donations to Caddy For A Cure a few years ago with David Toms. Knowing Steve's desire to make a difference in life by making it better for others, along with his previous experience of caddying, we knew he would be the perfect "caddy" for Jack Nicklaus in a setting like this. When we presented the opportunity to Steve, it took him about 30 seconds to make his decision, and we are so grateful he did!
There is not too much one could possibly say about Mr. Jack Nicklaus other than it is all true. He is the consummate man, professional, and golfer. His heart is an big as Ohio and he simply could not have been more friendly and gracious to his new found "caddies" for the day.
There are very few people who have had the opportunity to spend a day with the greatest of the great. To be told at the end of the day "well done good and faithful caddy" by Jack Nicklaus is, well, probably the nicest thing any golfer that has enjoyed the game could hear.
Special thanks to Jack Nicklaus and his wonderfully incredible team. And especially grateful thanks to Ken Kennerly, Ed McEnroe, Russ Evans , and the Honda Classic team for making this a reality for Caddy For A Cure. Many thanks and photos courtesy of Jim Mandeville and Fred Keel. | |

FOCUS ON FANCONI
Elias Ormond has a unique
presentation of FA. As the family says, he was blessed with nearly all of the potential
birth defects and abnormalities that can be associated by FA. This makes him
very medically complex with nearly 20 doctors overseeing various aspects of his
medical needs.
Elias has had nearly
30 operations and surgeries with many more planned in the near future. He had a
tracheostomy placed at 2 1/2 months old and was only able to take food via
feeding tube to the stomach (G-Tube). Elias has battled for his life on several occasions already in his short life. One of those times he was not expected to survive.
 Elias has the
most delightful and positive attitude. He is happy and full of fight, as well as
very self-motivated. When he decides he wants to do something he works hard for
it and does not give up if he fails. He is missing his radii bone in both arms
which cause clubbing of his hands. He is also missing his thumbs on each hand,
but he has adapted wonderfully and keeps trying to figure out ways to
accomplish things despite his disadvantages.
The Ormonds are a typical family that has been blind sided by this horrific disease. They have
been part of a small group of FA parents really pushing to create a successful
observance of an International Fanconi Anemia Day. This year they will have that
and it will continue to grow in a positive direction. They feel strongly, as we
do, about increasing awareness to help wipe this disease off the map. Please pray for Elias as he grows, and matures with his condition. He will soon require the necessary bone marrow transplant to survive and will encounter the most difficult challenge of his life.

ROBERT ALLENBY "CADDY'S FOR A CURE" AT HONDA CLASSIC

Eileen Young from Boston flew into Palm Beach to have the day of her lifetime with world ranked #14 Robert Allenby. Robert is a great guy, great friend, and great supporter of charities around the world along with Caddy For A Cure.
Ice cold temperatures did not keep our 3rd lady caddie from having a great day. She did an incredible job keeping up, and even helping Robert out around the PGA National golf course.
With a heart the size of Boston, Eileen graciously accepted her induction into the Caddy For A Cure "family" afterward by meeting FA Patient Christian Collins, and having dinner with Sgt. Andy Butterworth. The best news is she is already planning her return to the bag at the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton in the fall, and we cannot wait to see her "on the bag" again. Well done Eileen.

Do you believe?
We recently had the great fortune of having a Fanconi anemia patient stay with us for nearly three weeks straight. It was such a unique joy to really learn about the daily trials that a youngster goes through suffering from the ravages of Fanconi anemia.
We learned first hand what we believe indeed. We learned that there is no wealth, no possessions, no other success we would wish for other than to have this disease, and many others, eliminated.
We learned that this game is incredibly powerful in its reach and scope. And being with the greatest golfer of all time and watching him meet FA added even more fire in our hearts to press on.
We learned that there is no time like the present to help. It is not a choice to those that need it to put it off til tomorrow. To wait until the time is right, or the bank statement balances. Lord knows ours does not. We learned in these three short weeks a lot about the realness of life and how precious it is.
We know that Caddy For A Cure is not for every golfer. But we do know that who it is for have had some of the greatest experiences that golf can offer and are grateful they did it. Yes, they were sore for a few days. But pictures like the ones on this letter do not go away, nor do the memories, nor do the needs of the people we assist.
Caddy For A Cure this year for one of the world's best. Take Steve Hartnett's lead and check it off your golf "bucket list." There are many in this world who will be eternally grateful you did.
Sincerely,
Russ Holden PGA Caddy For A Cure Founder
