Skyline Update for Saco Spirit Logo ?

There's a new feature on Saco's skyline -- a wind generator on York Hill. At the last board meeting one member asked if the Saco Spirit logo collage of local buildings should be updated to reflect the newest feature downtown.  Here's what it might look like.

Strengthening Our Downtown In 2008 Campaign Begins

"As Saco Spirit begins its eighth year of service to the community, we are embarking on a campaign to reinvigorate our commitment to our mission 'to make Saco a better place to live and work by enhancing the vitality of our downtown.'"  Thus begins the letter which should arrive in 200 Saco mailboxes this week. The letter outlines these achievements:

  • Saco Spirit's key role in the mill district renewal by helping find the developer for the $100 million redevelopment of Saco Island.
  • Saco Spirit's help in designing the rehab of our beautiful Main Street with its flowerpots, history trail, seasonal decorations, and ornamental streetlights.
  • Construction of the Saco Riverwalk, community walking trail
  • Sponsorship each year of the Sidewalk Arts Festival, the Pumpkin Fest, and many other events.

Upcoming activities in our 34-point work plan support improved downtown parking, extending the Riverwalk, installing new banners and seasonal decorations, and attracting tenants to the renovated mills

"Good things are happening in Saco; a strong Saco Spirit helps ensure that changes happening in our historic city will enhance rather than diminish the special quality of a place we love," concludes the letter. We hope you'll look over the letter, the brochure, and Saco's beautiful downtown --  then use the return envelope to help continue this work.

The advisory board for the campaign includes these friends of downtown Saco :  Bill Johnson, Mary Johnson, Mark Johnston, Bill Kany, Mayor Ron Michaud, Bonita Pothier, Bernard Gaines, David H. Howe, and Sally Huot.

Simply You Too Adds Great Apparel Option Downtown

Congratulations to Lori Irving on the opening of Simply You Too, her new fashion boutique. At 199 Main Street it's practically across the street from her original Simply You, but has much more room for dresses and other apparel items. With Alphie's next door, Simply You and Saco Bay Classics across Main Street, and Reny's just a couple of blocks away, downtown Saco now has more apparel options than it has for many, many years.

Windmill Installation, and Windmill on the Skyline Photos

The city's new windmill on Saco Island is now generating electricity for the Amtrak parking lot lights and for the police station. Installed February 6, the windmill is on a 100 foot post with three 24 foot long blades. Made and installed by Entegrity Wind Systems of Boulder, Colorado, the generator is estimated to produce 90,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year.

1850 Mill Girl Murder Reveals Changing Times In Saco and New England

In April 1850, the body of a young woman was discovered in a stream near Storer Street in Saco.  Investigation revealed that it was murder.  The exhibition Mary Bean: The Factory Girl or the Victim of Seduction, on view at the Saco Museum until May 24 tells the story of that murder.

The Dyer Library/Saco Museum (DL/SM) collaborated with Dr. Elizabeth A. DeWolfe and the Department of History at the University of New England (UNE) to create a fascinating exhibition based upon DeWolfe's recently published book The Murder of Mary Bean and Other Stories.   Andrea Cochrane, Saco Museum Director, and DeWolfe team taught a course at UNE last fall where 15 students learned about museums and public history through the design and development of an exhibition about the Mary Bean story.  Seven students are continuing to work with the museum this semester through internship/citizenship to install the exhibition and develop and manage programs and assist with school tours.

Using the story of Berengera Caswell's life and death (Mary Bean was an alias), the exhibition explores several topics, including the changing role of women; competing medical practice and philosophies; the evolution of the criminal justice process; and sensationalism in the press. Newspaper accounts, textile artifacts, ladies accessories and numerous other items will be used to tell Berengera's story.  The exhibit team of 15 students has done a fantastic job pulling together and installing the exhibition.

Sponsors who have helped to make this exhibition possible:  DeWolfe & Wood Rare Books, The Kent State University Press, Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution and University of New England.
