Message from the Chairman
Prosperity and Sustainability are Not Mutually Exclusive "Make Money, Save the World"
| Daren Otten | Daren Otten, Coordinator of the Sustainable Manufacturing
Program within CSU, Chico's College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management, presented a program on sustainable manufacturing at
our August board meeting. Daren's presentation introduced our board to the
Sustainable Manufacturing curriculum which combines technical feasibility with
environmental responsibility and economic viability as vital components of any
successful manufacturing process. Daren's presentation included an introduction
to the Innovation Lab which is a 21,600 square foot facility in Chico which
contains manufacturing space and test labs available for use by start-up
companies. The Innovation Lab also provides student interns to assist start-ups
with their R&D, manufacturing trials, and gives them the opportunity to display
their products and processes to venture capitalists.
This kind of public-private business/university
collaboration is exactly what is needed to fix California's ailing economy. It
is not a quick fix, but over the longer term initiatives like this will allow
us to rebuild a manufacturing base and create base level jobs. Base level jobs
produce goods that are exported out of our community which in turn creates real
wealth we can put to work here at home. The creation of base level jobs has
been CEPCO's mission since our inception more than 25 years ago.
It is also encouraging to see more Career Technical
Education Path (CTEP) courses (known as industrial arts for those of you in my
generation) being offered in our local K-12 curriculum. By most accounts there
is a high level of interest among our local students for these programs.
CSU, Chico's
Sustainable Manufacturing and our local CTEP programs are signs we are trying
to head in the correct direction. A successful twenty-first century adaptation
of our nation's nineteenth century industrial revolution will ensure our
standard of living continues to rise and we continue to enjoy the freedoms to
which we have become accustomed. Nineteenth century industrial practices
created the stereotype manufacturing is a dirty polluting process conducted by
companies with little regard for the environment or industrial safety. This
stigma has persisted and part of the job to rebuild our manufacturing base is
to change the public's perception of manufacturing. Today, manufacturing (i.e.
wealth) and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. In fact there is a
symbiotic relationship between creation of wealth, societal advancement and
environmental stewardship.
Massive levels of debt in both the public and private
sectors and the continued need to borrow more money to maintain the status quo
is not sustainable. We are at a crossroads; we can either continue to borrow
and spend as we have been, and continue to give up our wealth at an ever
increasing pace to maintain our lifestyles, or we can roll up our sleeves and
get back to being a world wide leader in manufacturing. The later choice is the
more difficult path which requires hard work and personal sacrifice from all of
us. However, as is the case with most difficult endeavors, the end result will
be worth the effort.

CEPCO Job Creation Committee to host City Council Candidate Forums
Courtney Nelson, Chairman of the Job Creation Committee urges attendance by CEPCO members
|
The CEPCO Job Creation Committee has scheduled an
opportunity for the Candidates for Chico City Council to meet with members of
our committee and Board members to discuss their ideas/platform for the
upcoming election. The candidates that were invited understand that CEPCO does
not endorse candidates. Historically CEPCO has always provided an opportunity
for City Council candidates to meet with us to understand our role in business
attraction and economic development as well as an opportunity to hear their
ideas as well. We really encourage CEPCO members to attend as many
sessions as possible. Each session is on Thursday morning, 7:30 a.m at the
Chico Chamber Conference Room at 300 Salem Street.

 Jeff Schlicht Auctiva
As a CSUC graduate who grew up in the area, I knew returning to Chico
would bring me back to a great place to live and raise a family. But
relocating my company, Auctiva Corp., has also been beneficial. In the
seven years we've been based in Chico, the company has grown by more
than 50 employees...
Keep up with Come Home to Chico
