October 2010

Greetings!

In October, we take a closer look at PHD's Series CRS and CTS Compact Cylinders. Long life with a wide range of bore sizes are just a couple of reasons to consider these exceptional lines for your next automation project.

This month, from our Hints and Tips Department, we offer some installation suggestions for PHD's Series JC1SD Switches.

Also for October, we feature our new and improved Unlimited Unique Solutions Web Page. Making it easier for you to browse our many application solutions is what it's all about.

To your continued success!

Series CRS & CTS Cylinders....     Compact but Tough!

PHD's Series CRS and CTS Cylinders, available in eight bore sizes from 12 mm through 63 mm and with a rated travel life of 70 million inches, are likely the most robust cylinder in the compact class. With standard strokes ranging from 1/4 inch to as much as 7 inches, these units are ideal for applications where cylinder length is critical.

 Series CR & CT Cylinders

In the Series CRS, the standard piston imparts the shortest overall package length possible, while an optional wide piston provides additional rod end stability and magnet capability for use with PHD Reed and Solid State Switches. The Series CTS Cylinder is a non-rotating version with the same high quality and long life. Equipped with two hard chrome-plated guide shafts running through oil-impregnated bronze bushings, this model features a light-weight anodized aluminum Tool Plate for easy attachment of customer supplied tooling.

Optional Shock Pads, through and threaded mounting holes, and self-lubricating Nitrile piston seals are just a few more of the features offered by the Series CRS and CTS.

PHD Hints & Tips
Installing Series JC1SD Switches

First introduced on PHD's Series GRK Grippers, and most recently on our Series GRA Grippers, the Series JC1SD Switches are a little different in the way they are installed than what you might be used to.

1. The first thing to notice is that this switch package features a left-handed threaded screw for locking the switch in the actuator slot. You still turn it clockwise to secure it in place, but as you do it will rise out of the body, engaging with the top of the slot, causing the package to bottom securely in the actuator slot.

Series JC1SD Switch Adjustment

2. With many competitor's switches and actuators the installer is forced to insert the switch into the actuator slot prior to mounting the actuator on their machine. With PHD's Series JC1 Switch, the installation can usually be accomplished by rotating the switch 90 degrees and installing it right into the slot, then rotating it back 90 degrees, adjusting for position, and tightening the locking screw to secure the switch in place.

3. Reasonable care should be taken not to turn the screw counter-clockwise with excessive force once it has screwed into the body as damage could occur to the threaded insert within the housing. A diagram on the switch packaging illustrates this further.

4. When the locking screw contacts the top of the slot, it is possible to have the switch "walk" a little in the slot and move away from the desired position. Simply holding the switch cable firmly while making this adjustment should prevent this.

Unlimited Unique Solutions           Easier Navigation !

"Is there some place I can go to see some of PHD's Unlimited Unique Solution product history?"

You bet! PHD recently revised the web page for our Unlimited Unique Solutions group. To begin with, we've organized the page so that users can select to sort the myriad of actuators that have been developed over the years by either Product Type or Industry Served.

Unique Solutions Web Page

Next, actuators can also be selected for viewing by additional characteristics and capabilities such as Clean Room, Dispensing, Switch / Sensor Integration, and many many more. Are you looking for other products beyond the basic Cylinders, Slides, Rotary Actuators, or Grippers? Well, there's an area that allows selection of devices such as Cam Wheels, Hole Punching, Labeling and more.

Overall there are more than 75 different devices referenced and this is really just a tiny fraction of the total Unique Solutions that PHD Engineers have provided to the automation field over the years.

Browse through our recently re-designed Unlimited Unique Solutions web page for more ideas on what PHD can do for you. Like the name implies, it's Unlimited!
