Choose a Rotary with Stopping Power
When selecting a Rotary Actuator, you must consider bearing capacity and torque requirements for your desired load. But don't forget to consider the stopping capacity. Why?
Stopping rotation under load is the key factor in choosing the proper Rotary actuator, because moving loads develop kinetic energy which must be absorbed to bring the load to a stop. Forget to design for kinetic energy and you will have trouble with inaccurate positioning and premature failure.
PHD Series RA Rotary Actuators offer several ways to absorb kinetic energy. You can use Port Controls to adjust the speed, cushions for smooth deceleration, and built-in hydraulic shock absorbers for the maximum in deceleration control and rotational stopping ability. The RA Rotary also has oversized shafts, rack, and bearings to provide superb stopping capacity. Your goal should be zero backlash at ends of rotation to provide precise rotary positioning. The RA Rotary Actuator makes it easy with standard angle adjustments.
Want flexibility in mounting? We've got that too. The RA Rotary has mounting patterns on three surfaces. With standard delivery in only one day, the RA Rotary is ready when you need it.
Want help finding the rotary actuator with enough stopping power for your needs? You've got options:
- If you are the do-it-yourself type, go on over to sizing.phdinc.com and use our Sizing Software to plug in your feeds and speeds. We've already taken kinetic energy into consideration in all of our calculations to give you quick results.

Baked Goods Industry Focus
Most people think of PHD in terms of "Solutions for Industrial Automation" for durable goods production such as appliances, cars, electronic equipment, and medical devices, etc. You might be surprised to learn that our products are also used in the production of many food products. One area where PHD can be found is in commercial bakeries.
PHD is a supplier to numerous bakery equipment producers and also provides solutions for upgrading equipment in the actual bakeries. PHD Products used in bakeries are Rotary Actuators, pneumatic Cylinders, Linear Slides, and Escapements. Applications for these actuators include dough handling, bun slicing, packaging, palletizing and even dispensing sesame seeds for your favorite hamburger buns. PHD products are ideal for these applications due to their prolonged life and high reliability. They have long been used by bakery equipment machine builders in applications that require a more robust actuator.
You may or may not be involved in commercial baking. Either way it is good to know that PHD products are used in so many industries and that the need for reliability in any process makes PHD a great choice.
Got a difficult problem you just can't solve? Chances are, we've seen a similar challenge before. Let us help!
