Tricks to Resisting Treats this Halloween
Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat. If you don't, I don't care, I'll...eat candy everywhere. Of course, that's not the way the rhyme really goes, but as Halloween rapidly approaches, it's basically what happens.
Not much has changed since I was little: Kids still diligently go door-to-door hoping to fill their pillowcases or orange pumpkins with King Size treats (much preferred over pennies and popcorn), indulging on enough sugar for a week as they proceed on their journey.
But, a few days (or weeks) after Halloween, where has all that candy gone? In many cases, it's either already in the stomachs of dieters and their family members or sitting in the candy jar awaiting the next individual who can't resist temptation.
With Halloween rapidly approaching, it is important to think about ways to manage your diet through Halloween.
Some topics to think about:
- What candies you should buy: If your house is giving out candy on Halloween, think about which types of candy to give out to trick-or-treaters. It's best to buy candy that you don't like (in case there is any leftover) to remove the temptation to indulge.
- Removing or replacing candy: As with any other time of the year, if it's in the house, it can (and will) tempt you to stray. Brainstorm ways you can remove candy from the house and/or replace it with healthier options.
- Stress the Food Diary: Now is the time for you to be diligent about what you are eating. Your food diary can help to give a visual of what you are eating and (if you are indulging) how quickly the calories are adding up.
- Healthier Options:You want options! Try Ideal Protein chocolate soy puffs, or the Caramel Nut Bar, or the new Southwestern Cheese Curls - which can quench your need for candy and keep your mouth busy - or promote having a no-calorie beverage (such as water or plain iced coffee) to divert your attention.
You aren't Batman or Superman (unless you choose to dress that way for a night), but you can be armed with the tools you need to be strong and resilient in resisting temptation. Besides, I think you'd take a healthy, well, and long, happy life over the Batmobile any day.
