Did you know . . .
...that in shelters everywhere, dark coated dogs and cats wait longer to be adopted than other animals?
Quick Links
From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
At the end of September many friends to animals gathered at the I-Hotel for our annual Fur Ball fundraiser.  We're so grateful to everyone who made the event possible.  Staff members and volunteers put in long hours planning and running the event; sponsors helped us to meet expenses; and over 260 guests dug deep into their pockets to make the silent and live auctions a huge success!  Thank you all!

Another big project in September was installation of a new roof at CCHS.  Yes, after several years of leaky ceilings and patch repairs, we finally had no choice but to re-roof the shelter.  As we prepared for the job, we realized that new roof installation provided us with a great opportunity to do something extra for our animal residents, and added several sun tunnels to the project.  The sun tunnels bring natural daylight into two of our dog and cat adoption areas that previously had no exposure to natural light.

Although the work had to be done in September, we're still raising the money to cover the cost of the new roof and sun tunnels.  If you would like to make a donation to the roof campaign, see the article below for details.

While September sure was busy, you can see from the Calendar section of this newsletter that we're not slowing down!  Still ahead this fall you'll find CCHS at Market-at-the-Square, Farm & Fleet, Illini football games (E-5), and the Chris Cringle Craft Fair.  We look forward to seeing you at these events and invite you to visit the shelter during our open hours to take a look at our recent improvements.

Thank you all so much for your continued support.  Your compassion for animals and generosity make our work possible!

Help Woof CCHS!
Help Woof CCHS logo
For the past few years, a rainstorm coming through Champaign-Urbana meant pulling out buckets and pans to collect rain water throughout the shelter as it seeped through the ceiling. Our roofer would come whenever we called and patch what he could, but we knew the day would come when we needed a more permanent fix.  That day came this summer.  It's tough to be open for adoptions with buckets on the front counter and puddles on the floors!

Now we're asking for your help to keep the shelter open and the animals warm, safe, and dry. Please make a pledge or donation to the CCHS Shelter Roof Campaign. Your pledge can be paid in the coming months at your convenience and you can choose a pledge level that fits into your budget. Click here to make a gift for the new roof.

Animal Adventure Camp
Camper with mouseAnimal Adventure Camp held it's second annual session this summer and was so successful we're planning two sessions next year!  Through a partnership with the Urbana Park District, Humane Investigator/Educator Clay Foley and Humane Ed volunteers led the campers (ages 7 - 11) through an exciting week of interactions with animals, ending with a full-day visit to the shelter.

Camper with dogThe children met local experts in animal care and rescue, including an animal control warden, representatives from bird and reptile rescue organizations, and individuals (and dogs) trained to provide animal assisted therapy.  "Creature Teachers" included dogs, cats and kittens, Miss Bojangles - a beautiful orange and gold macaw, a guinea pig, a bunny, mice, a python named Uzuri, a milksnake named Keira, and a hedgehog named Pookie.

Campers learned how therapy dogs are trained and had the opportunity for some hands-on practice.  In a game called Bunny Bingo, they learned the value of sitting quietly and simply watching an animal, marking their game cards when Hannah the rabbit performed particular actions.

Camper with kittenDuring craft time, campers made bird toys to donate to a local avian rescue, decorated bandannas for shelter dogs, and designed colorful cage cards for shelter cats.

On their visit to the shelter, the children met animals, spent time in the medical lab, looking at xrays, and peering through a microscope.  At the end of the day, each camper received an award, such as "Best Fact Checker" and "Future Shelter Manager."

Watch for announcements of next year's Animal Adventure Camp!

Pet of the Month:  Christina

Pet of theMonth

Before she was relinquished to CCHS in late June, Christina was living under some pretty terrible conditions.  She was extremely shy at first and clearly had never seen a dog toy.  It has been a joy for the staff to see Christina come out of her shell and learn to play and enjoy life.  This gentle girl is now very friendly with people, including children.  She is gentle and good with cats as well as other dogs.

Christina is about 4 years old.  She is already spayed and microchipped.

Alum of the Month: Ziggy

Alum PictureZiggy is a 5-year-old, female green iguana adopted by the Bode family in September.  Her 6-foot-tall wire and wood cage has two large branches to climb and rest on.  From her perches, Ziggy can enjoy the view and soak in the sun through young Albert Bode's bedroom window.  She also has the option of hiding behind the plastic plants inside the cage.

After a week or so of adjusting to her new surroundings, Ziggy started eating a bigger plate of mustard greens, collard greens, squash, and snow peas once -- and sometimes twice -- a day.  She climbs down to sit in the water pan at the bottom of the cage occasionally, but mostly likes to sit under the basking light and in the path of the reptile fogger.  Ziggy is very friendly and willingly allows the Bodes to take her out of her cage to meet friends that come to visit.

Ziggy is not afraid of the Bode's two cats and dog, a Sheltie.  The cats give her a wide berth and the Sheltie likes to follow and sniff her.  Ziggy likes it when people pet her or massage her back and she enjoys being on Albert's shoulder.  She also really likes to eat apple peels and blueberries for a little treat.  When she is misted her with a squirt bottle, Ziggy lifts her head, closes her eyes, and looks like a very happy iguana.  The Bode family continues to enjoy learning about how to take care of Ziggy and loves having her as a part of the family.

Volunteer of the Month:  Hugh Bishop
Volunteer of the MonthHugh has become one of our most dedicated and reliable volunteers!  Every Thursday morning (and on major holidays) Hugh can be found cleaning cat cages and communal cat rooms at the shelter.

The staff loves having Hugh around because he has a great attitude, is always smiling, and needs little direction.  Hugh has learned the system and recognizes what needs to be done -- and does it!  He never complains about doing "grunt work."

We're sure that if our feline residents could talk they'd have nothing but praise for Hugh and would join us in saying, "thank you."

For more information on volunteering, see Becoming a CCHS Volunteer.
Employee of the Month:  Tanya
Employee of the monthTanya joined the CCHS Medical Staff in May 2010 and has become a trusted and reliable team member.  Always professional and with great attention to detail, Tanya is making sure the animals at CCHS receive excellent care.

Tanya moved to C-U from Pennsylvania after earning her bachelors degree in Biology.   She has always loved animals and even as a child she rescued wild animals.  Tanya also had many pets, including cats, dogs, hamsters, and birds.  Eventually Tanya would like to become a veterinarian.

Tanya is amazed at how much she has learned since joining the CCHS medical staff.  She enjoys her job because her actions have a direct impact on animals.  It means a lot to Tanya to be involved with saving animals' lives.  And it means a lot to us to have Tanya on the team!

Painting Portraits to Help Pets
PaintingLocal artist, Pat Marlow, has generously offered to help CCHS by donating 100% of the money she earns painting portraits for CCHS friends and supporters.

How does it work?  You provide Pat with a photograph that she will use to create a portrait of your beloved animal (or human) family member.  Pat will provide all the materials necessary for creating your painting and will determine a "price" for her work.  If you're satisfied with Pat's final product, you'll make your payment directly to the Champaign County Humane Society.  If you're not satisfied, you will be under no obligation to buy the portrait.

If you'd like to talk to Pat about doing a portrait for you, call her at 217-384-1774 or email her at patmikem@yahoo.com.
