Did you know . . .
that return-to-owner rates are more than double for dogs and cats that have microchips?
Quick Links
From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
Tomorrow is Homeless Animals Day.  On this day around the world many animal welfare and rescue groups hold candlelight vigils to call attention to the plight of homeless animals and honor the memory of those who have lost their lives due to abandonment and pet-overpopulation.

For the past three years, local animal welfare agencies have recognized Homeless Animals Day by joining together at Market-at-the-Square in Urbana.  CCHS will be there again tomorrow, along with partner agencies of the Central Illinois Animal Welfare Coalition (CIAWC).

At this year's market event, we're focusing on the importance of pet identification.  It's a fact that lost pets that are microchipped have a significantly greater chance of being reunited with their owners than do unchipped animals.  And, collars and tags make it easier for a finder to return a lost pet to his/her owner immediately.

I'd like to have a tag-making machine at CCHS so that adopters can leave the shelter with IDd takes for their new pets with their name and contact information already engraved.  Studies have shown that sending adopters home with pets sporting collars and tags is the best way to ensure that the animals will continue to wear proper ID.

A grant may partially fund a tag making machine for CCHS, but we also need to raise some of the money ourselves.  If you think this would be a good thing for us to have, I hope you'll consider making a donation to the Tagging Fund at this weekend's event or by sending in a donation for "Tagging" via mail, Paypal, or phone/credit card.

Welcome back UI students and C/U vacationers - I hope we see you tomorrow at the market!

Pet of the Month:  Melody

Pet of the monthMelody is a beautiful 5-year old Turkish Van mix.  A little shy at first, she warms up quickly.  She'd be happy to share a home with other cats or dogs and does well with children.  She loves to be brushed and could occupy a comfortable lap for hours.

Melody was surrendered in March 2010 by some people who had found her as a stray.  Although they gave her a home for a while, they could not keep her.

Alum of the Month: Baby D

Pet of the MonthYou may remember Baby D; she was the featured pet in our April E-Newsletter and she had been at the shelter since January.

When Baby D arrived at CCHS, we noticed right away that something was wrong with her left front leg.  She had a slight limp in addition to what looked like muscle twitches.  Our medical staff also observed decreased muscle mass in the left shoulder area.  Upon examination by a local veterinarian, it is now believed that Baby D's shoulder problem is due to a bout of distemper when she was a puppy.

Baby D, on the day she went home with her new family.
Baby D with new family.
We're now delighted to report that in early June, Baby D went home with her new family!

Recently, the family brought Baby D by the shelter for a visit and the staff could see that Baby D is doing well and has found a home for life.

Volunteer of the Month:  Sarah Larck
Volunteer of the monthSarah Larck is a CCHS Youth Volunteer, and a great one at that!  Extremely reliable and hard working, Sarah has wowed the staff with her willingness to perform any task, no matter how dirty she might get!  The staff is also amazed at her ability to remember animals' names - it seems she knows them all.

Sarah assists the staff and other volunteers in a variety of jobs, including animal feeding, cleaning cages and kennels, and socializing animals.

We're so thankful for Sarah's help during our busy summer season!

For more information on volunteering, see Becoming a CCHS Volunteer.

Employee of the Month: Sara Schmidt
Staff member of the monthAfter a six-year career in social work, Sara was ready for a change when she saw there was an opening on the CCHS Adoption Staff.  She joined the team in March 2010, and says that coming to work at CCHS has changed her life for the better.  And we're happy she's happy!

Sara is always cheerful and pleasant with co-workers and the public.  Sara says what she likes best is helping people select an animal, and being a part of the "go home" experience.  What everyone appreciates about Sara is that she maintains a great attitude and takes pride in her work even when she is assigned the more mundane and back-breaking tasks of scrubbing down kennels, changing cat litter, or mopping floors.

Originally from Ohio (Cleveland area), Sara has lived in this area since 2005 with her husband, a video game illustrator at Volition, Inc., and their two cats, Dexter and Neville.  In her spare time, Sara is an avid scrap-booker.

Thank you Sara, for your hard work and commitment!

Painting Portraits to Help Pets
PaintingLocal artist, Pat Marlow, has generously offered to help CCHS by donating 100% of the money she earns painting portraits for CCHS friends and supporters.

How does it work?  You provide Pat with a photograph that she will use to create a portrait of your beloved animal (or human) family member.  Pat will provide all the materials necessary for creating your painting and will determine a "price" for her work.  If you're satisfied with Pat's final product, you'll make your payment directly to the Champaign County Humane Society.  If you're not satisfied, you will be under no obligation to buy the portrait.

If you'd like to talk to Pat about doing a portrait for you, call her at 217-384-1774 or email her at patmikem@yahoo.com.
