From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
I can't say it enough, but I'll try:  thank you, thank you, thank you!  Thank you for making our annual GIANT Garage Sale a giant success!  We had another record-breaking year, earning over $53,000 to fund animal shelter operations.

Specifically, I'm thankful to all of the volunteers--many of whom worked long hours in the heat--to make this year's sale happen!

I'm also grateful to everyone in the community who donated items for us to sell or shopped the sale.  Your participation is what makes it all possible.

And, finally, I'm grateful to everyone who provided support by donating their services, publicizing the sale, or bringing food to Kesler Hall for our volunteers.  Every single contribution made a difference and helped to make the sale a great success.

In this issue of our online newsletter, you'll learn that while we were busy with the garage sale, the Illinois legislature made headway on a new law requiring pet shops to be more forthcoming with information about animals offered for sale.  The law has now passed both the House and Senate and awaits the governor's signature.

This issue also brings news of some unique fundraisers coming up.  High Heels After 5 at Kennedy's is first up, this Thursday from 5-7 pm.  And before you click away, make sure you call for an appointment to have your pet's photo taken by Larry Kanfer!  Larry has kindly agreed to shoot portraits of pets as a fundraiser for CCHS!  This is a fabulous opportunity that you won't want to miss.

Thanks again for supporting CCHS!

Illinois Pet Store Disclosure Law Passes Senate
Pet Shop at Market Place MallLast month, the Illinois state legislature unanimously passed a bill that protects consumers by requiring pet shops to disclose information about the animals they offer for sale.

House Bill 5772, sponsored by Rep. Susana Mendoza, D-Chicago, and Sen. Jeffrey Schoenberg, D-Evanston, requires pet shops to post information on or near the cages of dogs and cats including:  the name and address of each animal's breeder, a record of all veterinary conditions and/or treatments, and any known information regarding congenital or hereditary defects of the animals' parents.

The legislation has now passed both the House and Senate.  Assuming it is signed into law by Gov. Pat Quinn, it takes effect on January 1, 2011.

The new law will affect animal shelters too. For how it will impact CCHS and why we still applaud it, read the rest of this article on the web >>>
Pet of the Month:  Angel

Picture of AlumAngel is a three-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier mix who has been at CCHS since March.

Angel was rescued from a home where she was used for breeding purposes only and was not properly cared for.

Angel loves other dogs, but would not do well in a home with cats or small animals.  She loves children and would be suitable for a home with kids of any age.  She is crate trained and knows sit, come, and down.

Alum of the Month:  Safari

Picture of AlumSafari came to CCHS in horrible condition.  She was starving, riddled with fleas, and suffering from demodectic mange which had caused her to lose most of her fur.  She also had a large, fresh (but healing) scar around her neck.  This type of wound is usually caused by an embedded collar.

Despite all that, Safari was a sweet and gentle girl.  The staff got to know Safari quite well because of the special care she needed.  Everyone worked hard to provide her with comfort at the shelter, and looked forward to the day when she would find a new "forever home."

When Tim & Leslie Rye came to CCHS, they were looking for a dog that would do well with their cat, Curry, also a CCHS alum.  They chose Safari and since the day they took her home, it has been a great match!

They recently wrote:  "Safari is doing great!  Her hair has grown in beautifully and she successfully completed her Canine Good Citizen test in March.  She loves chilling out with us on the sofa and taking long walks.  We also adopted Curry (formerly Danny) in August of 2007, he and Safari have become snuggle buddies..... Leslie and Tim Rye"

Note: That's Safari and Curry snuggling together in the banner at the top of this email.

Volunteer of the Month:  Mare Payne

Volunteer of the Month pictureMare Payne's contributions to CCHS over the years have been incalculable, and to express our true gratitude would take far more space than this e-newsletter allows.

Beginning in 1996, Mare devoted a decade to serving as chief editor of Paw Prints, our print newsletter. Using the professional skills she honed in her job at the Illinois News Bureau, she set the style and standard of excellence for the publication.  She was elected to the CCHS Board of Directors and took on the position of Board Secretary for a year in 2004.  For the past six years, Mare has taken on the most challenging volunteer job there is - chairing the Giant Memorial Day Weekend Garage Sale.

Mare's careful planning and calm, steady leadership of scores of volunteers has built the CCHS Garage Sale into a highly anticipated, community wide event that brings in much needed funds for animal care at the shelter.  These last six years with Mare at the helm, the CCHS Garage Sale has grossed over $260,000!  That's over 40% of the event's total since it's inception in 1985.

Thank you Mare, for everything you do!

Video: See WCIA May 20, 2010 interview with Mare:  "Massive Garage Sale".

Employee of the Month: Michelle McKnight
Employee of the MonthShelter Manager, Michelle McKnight, is ordinarily unflappable.  But last month, when Mavidea Technology Group came in to replace our server and computer workstations, Michelle's ability to remain calm through turmoil was truly remarkable!

Michelle was the point person for the Mavidea technicians as well as the entire staff.  The installation took place on a Tuesday (the one day we are closed to the public), and the pressure was on to have the new system operating before we opened to the public on Wednesday afternoon.  With new computers, a new server, and a new operating system, there was a lot for staff members to get used to - not just on installation day, but for the days (and weeks) that followed.  Michelle never lost her cool and was patient and helpful to everyone - even when frustrations were running high.

Few staff members were aware of the long hours Michelle was putting in to keep up with the computer installation as well as all her other duties.  Michelle doesn't complain; she just gets the job done!

Thanks Michelle; CCHS is lucky to have you at the helm!

Painting Portraits to Help Pets
PaintingLocal artist, Pat Marlow, has generously offered to help CCHS by donating 100% of the money she earns painting portraits for CCHS friends and supporters.

How does it work?  You provide Pat with a photograph that she will use to create a portrait of your beloved animal (or human) family member.  Pat will provide all the materials necessary for creating your painting and will determine a "price" for her work.  If you're satisfied with Pat's final product, you'll make your payment directly to the Champaign County Humane Society.  If you're not satisfied, you will be under no obligation to buy the portrait.

If you'd like to talk to Pat about doing a portrait for you, call her at 217-384-1774 or email her at patmikem@yahoo.com.
