From the Executive Director |
Dear friends,
February is a tough month, isn't it? The weather is cold, the skies are gray, and you can't walk from your car to the coffee shop without risking your life on the ice.
But I'm trying not to despair. February has its up sides too. There is Valentine's Day - fun for anyone who likes an excuse to eat good chocolate or exchange gifts. And February is the one month of the year in which things slow down for us at CCHS. I can't say why, but usually every February the number of animal intakes decreases and we can catch our breath before the hectic spring season begins.
Nevertheless, we're running a Valentine's Day adoption promotion from February 8th through 14th. We've identified some shelter animals that have been with us a little longer than we would like, and we hope our Valentine's Day campaign will generate some interest in them. Animals sporting a red bandana or with a red heart on their kennel or cage will be available for 1/2 price during the promotion. So, if you're ready for a new pet who needs your love, now is a good time to come out to the shelter and find a valentine.
There's one more good thing about February: it's the month of the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. If you enjoy this "mother of all dog shows," come join us at Houlihan's at the I-Hotel where the live broadcast from Madison Square Garden will be playing on all 4 large screen TVs! The dog show is Feb. 15 and 16 from 7-10 p.m. and we'll be at Houlihans both nights.
I know it's cold (and snowy) now, but maybe by next week we'll have a break in the weather and you'll be able to venture out to join us at Houlihan's for dinner, dog show, and a raffle to benefit CCHS.
Read on for more details on CCHS events and more!
Very truly yours, Tief CCHS Executive Director
P.S. Mark your calendars to save the date for this year's Mutt Strut, Saturday April 24th at Hessel Park in Champaign.

Valentine's Day Adoption Event |

Alum of the Month: Nase
|

Nase, formerly known as Tulip, was one of the puppies born to Lucille, a dog surrendered to CCHS shortly before giving birth in the summer of 2009. Lucille and her puppies were kept in foster care until the pups were old enough to be adopted.
Adopter Vickie Satzman says Nase found her after a very difficult year in which she lost her beloved 13-year-old Lab, Cheyanne. With Cheyanne gone, Vickie's other dog, an 11-year old German Shepherd named Sierra, seemed to be depressed. Adopting Nase (which means "younger sister" in the Cheyenne language) was as much for Sierra as for Vickie.
As it turns out, Nase was just what Vickie and Sierra needed! During the first couple of days, Sierra was not so sure this was a good idea (puppies can be more than a little overwhelming), but it didn't take long for Sierra to warm up to the little black fur ball. Now Vickie describes the two dogs as "sisters for life" and she is delighted that Sierra is acting like a puppy again herself! Vickie says that Nase has turned out to be a perfect dog. She is smart, affectionate and a huge "snuggle bug" with a big personality to match.
See more pictures and read of Nase's adventures at Nase's blog.

Pets of the Month: Hedee and Teaser |
Hedee and Teaser are a wonderful pair of cats looking for a home together. Hedde (the orange Tabby on the left) is eight years old and more outgoing than his younger, shyer friend, Teaser (the tabby on the right). When placed in a new environment, Hedee does not hesitate to explore. Hedee is always ready to play and does a great job of coaxing Teaser to join in the fun.
Teaser has a bobtail. We're not sure if he is part Manx or Pixiebob, but we do know that he is 100% adorable! This shy guy follows his friend Hedee everywhere. Although Teaser is reserved with people at first, once he gets used to them he is very loving.

Employee of the Month: Lee Ann Donner
|
Lee Ann Donner is employee of the month in recognition of one amazing accomplishment - winning CCHS the $35,000 Extreme Technology Makeover from Mavidea Technology Group!
Lee Ann joined the staff of CCHS as Development Director in August 2009. It wasn't too long after, that we learned of Mavidea's Technology Makeover contest. Lee Ann knew first-hand how badly CCHS needed this makeover and was determined to prepare the most compelling application she could. She consulted with CCHS staff members about their technology needs and how having better equipment could increase efficiency and improve customer service; she consulted with our volunteer I.T. person about the limitations we faced with our existing equipment and what could be achieved if we won the makeover; and she consulted with technology experts in the community to learn about the field and how to write an application that would speak to people in the business. Having done all her homework, she wrote the application, submitted it on time, and then . . . we waited.
Lee Ann's efforts paid off when Mavidea announced the winner of the Makeover in November. Since that time, we have been working with the Mavidea team on planning the installation and configuring the equipment. If all goes as planned, the new server and 10 new workstations will be installed by the end of this month. And, according to the Mavidea team, life will change for CCHS employees! We can't wait.
The entire staff is grateful to Lee Ann for bringing us the Extreme Technology Makeover!

Volunteer of the Month: Melissa Skowronski
|
Melissa Skowronski is one of our amazing foster-care volunteers.
Foster volunteers are vital to CCHS. These dedicated people take special-needs shelter animals into their homes to provide them with medical care or socialization so that they can return to the shelter strong, healthy, and ready for adoption.
Melissa is an "awesome" foster volunteer because she is willing to take home groups of kittens - even large litters of 7 to 8 kittens. She tackles even the toughest of medical cases and does a fantastic job of caring for her foster kittens. She follows the directions of the medical staff to a tee, is always on time for appointments, and knows when to contact the staff because something has come up that requires attention. The medical staff is confident that when kittens have gone home with Melissa they are going to come back healthy and happy.
It helps that Melissa is a student in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois. We're predicting that Melissa will make a great veterinarian, and we're grateful that she is getting some on-the-job experience with us! Thank you, Melissa.

Providing for Your Pets after You're Gone |
Many people worry about what will happen to their pets when they die. If this is a concern of yours, there are two important estate planning documents that you should look into.
First is a simple will. In your will, you can name the person or people who you would like to become the custodians of your pets after your death. It's a good idea to talk to those people now, to make sure that they are willing to bear this responsibility. If you don't know anyone who can take on the responsibility for owning or re-homing your pets, name an animal shelter or rescue group that you feel comfortable with.
See an attorney to make sure you have a valid will that clearly states who shall inherit your pets. This is the only way to ensure that your wishes are followed after your death.
The second important document is a Pet Trust. Many people hesitate to ask friends or family members about caring for their pets after death because they realize what a financial burden pet ownership can be. That's where the Illinois Pet Trust Law comes into play.
Under this law, you can create a trust fund solely for the purpose of providing for your pet. Using a pet trust ensures that the money you have left for the care of your pets will be used for that purpose only. Under the Pet Trust Law, when the last pet named in the trust dies, the trust terminates and the remaining assets in the trust revert back to the estate unless other provisions for those funds are included in the trust.
Your pet trust can provide that any remaining trust assets will be transferred to another individual or to a charity. For example, many pet owners choose to leave the remainder of the trust assets to an animal shelter or other animal welfare non-profit organization.
Any attorney experienced in estate planning can help you draft a will and pet trust that provide for your animals. The citation for the Illinois pet trust law is 760 ILCS 5/15.2. |
The Dog Talk Project
|
Do you like to talk about your dog?
At the Dog Talk Project, someone is listening. The Dog Talk Project is a web-based survey and data collection project that studies the relationships between people and their dogs. The premise of Dog Talk is simple - it explores the details of relationships between dogs and their people by creating and distributing owner surveys that examine a wide variety of dog-related topics. Information collected through the surveys is organized into a continually expanding database, which is then used to answer questions about dogs' lives, their health care, nutrition, behavior, training, and their relationships with the other dogs and the people in their lives.
