From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
As usual, it has been a busy fall season at CCHS!

We threw a big party, our annual Fur Ball, on September 25th and by all accounts, a good time was had by all!  We're grateful to all the members of the Fur Ball planning committee as well as all the local businesses and individuals who donated a wonderful array of auction items.  And of course we are ever grateful for the generous people who attended the event to show their support for our cause.

We're also keeping busy with an influx of volunteers at the shelter.  We've been training lots of new kennel workers, dog walkers, and cat socializers and believe me, we're not complaining.  More volunteers at the shelter means a better quality of life for our animal residents.  If you've been thinking about joining the team, we'd love to see you at our next open orientation on November 17th, 6:30 pm at the Champaign Public Library.

And speaking of busy volunteers, you'll find a lot of them working our concession stand at Memorial Stadium.  If you're an Illini fan, please pick up your game day snacks and drinks from stand E-5 (at the South East corner of the stadium) where CCHS volunteers are happy to serve you with speed!

Our busy season continues for another month or two, with more football games, holiday markets, and more.  Read on for the details!

Very truly yours,

Tief
CCHS Executive Director

November 14th Has Been Adopted!

Pet of the Month:  Gambit
Gambit, a mixed breed dogGambit is a beautiful 9 month old shepherd mix weighing about 42 pounds.  The Shelter Staff describe Gambit as sweet, gentle, cheerful, and calm for her age.  Gambit knows sit, shake, and lie down.  She also walks well on a leash and is good with other nice dogs.

Unfortunately, Gambit has been diagnosed with left-elbow dysplasia which might require surgery.  We're looking for someone special for Gambit who will love her unconditionally and provide for her special needs.

Two plus one Equals - a house full of fun!

After Louise Dreher's beloved cat died last March she found that she hated being without one.  She came to CCHS with the intention of adopting two cats so they would be good company for each other while she was at work.

When she came to the shelter and began looking for her new companions, Louise "wanted all of the animals in the shelter."  But being realistic, she narrowed it down by asking the Adoptions Staff which two cats they would like to see adopted together.  They suggested Kit and Juno.  After spending some time with both of them, Louise decided to adopt them.

When Louise later returned to the shelter to pick up Kit and Juno, a staff member mentioned that another cat, Max, was their good pal, and the three cats had played together really well.  Louise wasn't looking to adopt three cats, but she liked Max, and so for several weeks she tried to find someone to adopt him.  But before too long, Louise decided that Max needed to be with his friends, Kit and Juno, and she adopted him, too.

"They get along great," Louise says, and she loves to watch them play.  They skate across her hardwood floor like it is ice.  Louise says going from one cat to three hasn't been really challenging yet, but she reserves the right to change her mind after she puts up a Christmas tree.

Volunteer of the Month:  Janet Jarvis
Picture of JanetJanet works a weekly shift as an adoption counselor, fosters cats, helps out at off-site events, and assists CCHS staff members every Thursday in preparing and transporting an animal to the WCIA News station for "Pet-On-the-Set."  Regardless of the weather, the traffic, or an animal's reluctance to get in the car, Janet always makes it to the T.V. studio on time!

An Indiana native, Janet moved to the area in 2001.  For her day job, she works as a geographic information systems technician at the Illinois Natural History Survey.  In July 2007, Janet started out as a volunteer dog walker.  She was originally drawn to the CCHS volunteer program for two reasons:  (1) she wanted to meet people, and (2) she needed a dog fix because her landlord didn't allow her to have one.

Janet says that she continues to volunteer at CCHS because she likes the feeling she gets from knowing that she is "doing something good."  She has also met a lot of interesting people by volunteering at the shelter and at events like the GIANT Garage Sale.  But for Janet, the most rewarding part of volunteering comes in seeing long-term animal residents go home with wonderful people.
We know what she means!

Thank you Janet for all you do to help us help animals!

Employee of the Month:  Danielle Swanson
DanielleA May 2008 graduate of the University of Illinois, Danielle joined the Adoptions staff in July of this year, and quickly proved herself to be a fantastic member of the team.  During a time that we were short-staffed, Danielle volunteered to take on extra duties and work on her days off.  As you might imagine, everybody likes Danielle!  And, she really knows her stuff when it comes to animal care and adoptions.

Danielle grew up on a Dairy Farm in Woodstock, Illinois.  When she began her college career as an Animal Sciences Major at UI, she knew she wanted to pursue an animal-related field, but she wasn't sure what it would be.  We're hoping that Danielle has found her niche with us.

Danielle says that the most rewarding adoptions are the ones that take time.  While some patrons come to CCHS and find an animal to adopt right away, others return to the shelter over and over, looking for just the right pet.  Through that process, the adoptions staff members get to know the adopter and work hard to help make a good match.  When these adopters finally find the animal that will make their family complete, Danielle and the rest of the staff are delighted for both the adopter and the lucky animal they've chosen with such great care.  CCHS is lucky to have staff members like Danielle to help our patrons find the right animal companion for them.

Now Available:  An Online Directory of Local Animal Welfare Agencies
Coalition Magnet
The Central Illinois Animal Welfare Coalition (CIAWC) has launched an online directory of services for homeless and disadvantaged animals in Champaign and Douglas Counties.

The CIAWC created this resource for the public and for veterinary clinics and other agencies whose clients may find themselves in need of companion animal-related advice or assistance.

The directory provides a comprehensive listing of agencies that accept and rehome a wide variety of pets, including cats, dogs, small mammals, birds, and some farm species.  It also identifies agencies that provide animal cruelty investigations, humane education programs, volunteer opportunities, assistance to low-income pet owners, and more.

You can access the online directory from the CIAWC homepage, or click here.
