From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,

It's been all hustle and bustle out at the shelter lately!  By the 4th of July, our in-shelter kitten populatin had increased substantially, as it usually does this time of year.  While we love having kittens around, a larger kitten population puts more pressure on the staff to complete animal care and cleaning chores before opening each day.

Not to worry though, because our fantastic staff has been rising to the occasion - and then some!  Not only have they been getting their work done, but they've also managed to bring over 40 new volunteers through basic training at the shelter.  And those volunteers have been busy too!

Thanks to our new volunteers, our dogs are enjoying stuffed Kong toys every day.  These yummy treats provide the dogs with a rewarding challenge, and help decrease barking and restlessness in the kennels.

We've got something special for cats as well.  Just last week we installed a television in one of our communal cat rooms.  At intervals throughout the day, a "cat sitter" video comes on that some of the cats find absolutely mesmorizing.  And, for the cats that look like they spend a little too much time in front of the t.v., we're starting a fitness program.  Volunteers will use a variety of toys and techniques to get our hefty felines moving each day.

We're keeping busy outside our four-walls as well.  Check out this Saturday's schedule!  You'll find us at Market-at-the-Square, Meadowbrook Park and Maurices clothing store.  More to come in August and September, too.

I hope you'll come out to visit the shelter, or stop by one of our events when you're out and about.  It's always great to hear from our adopters and supporters.

Very truly yours,

Tief

Is Your Dog A True Party Animal?
Picture of WhoopieThe Champaign Park District opened a new outdoor dog park on June 13, 2009, providing the community with a new area where dog owners can exercise their pets off leash.  But before you rush out to the new park, experts suggest you consider carefully whether it's you or your dog who really craves the party atmosphere of an off-leash park.

Whether or not to make use of a local dog park may be a difficult decision for pet owners, Pat Miller, owner of Peaceable Paws Training Center in Hagerstown, Md., says in an article in Whole-Dog-Journal.com. Some pet owners know their dogs live and breathe for their dog park visits, others have watched their pets be traumatized or even killed by the lack of supervision in off-leash areas. Just like people, dogs have unique personalities. While some dogs have excellent social skills and enjoy meeting lots of dogs, others find it stressful or overwhelming, or simply don't have the skill it takes to diffuse tension and avoid conflicts.

Volunteer of the Month:  Bob McCormick
Picture of BobBob is an exceptional volunteer! Bob volunteers an average of 30 hours per week and has made it his mission to provide all of the small mammals at CCHS with the best possible care.

In addition to cleaning cages and refreshing food and water, Bob often provides our critters appropriate fresh fruits and vegetables, at his own expense. On any given day, you are likely to find Bob on the floor in a get-acquainted room, offering his unconditional love and attention to a rabbit, guinea pig, rat or mouse.  No creature is too small or unusual for Bob. He loves them all and makes sure they get exercise and affection while at CCHS.  Thank you, Bob!
Employee of the Month:  Heather Les
Picture of HeatherSince February 2008, Heather has worked in the Medical Lab, providing daily treatments to CCHS animals and helping to monitor the health and well being of all shelter residents.  Along with her daily duties, Heather assists the Medical Lab Manager in the training of medical volunteers, interns and veterinary students.  She has helped us to develop and implement effective new medical protocols.  Heather is pursuing her master's degree in applied animal behavior at the University of Illinois.  Her knowledge and experience make her a valuable resource for CCHS employees, volunteers and patrons.  Heather has a terrific attitude, works hard and is always helpful and friendly.
Pet of the Month: Xavier
Picture of XavierXavier was relinquished to CCHS three months ago because his owner had to move.  He is a feisty, 18-month old, black and white domestic shorthair, who can't get enough play time!  Xavier will be great with a family and would do well in a household with dogs and other cats, too.  He enjoys playing fetch and curling up in a warm lap. Xavier is a pure joy.
Alum of the Month:  Marley
Picture of MarleyWhen Judi Hutchcraft's two grandsons approached her about getting a dog, she was concerned that the boys didn't understand that pet ownership is a huge responsibility.

"We began talking about all of the effort a dog would need like feeding, walking and training," she said.  Judi raised three children with dogs in the house and understood the boys' desire, but she was dubious about having a puppy.

Judi brought her grandsons to CCHS to look for a dog that would fit in their home.  She was grateful to find Marley, a medium-sized, adult dog, who was gentle with the children and didn't shed.  So far, Judi says the boys have been wonderful about caring for their new pet.  The boys are responsible for feeding and walking Marley every day.

"Marley loves to walk," she says.  "We just say the word and her tail wags like crazy.  I think the boys wish she had more energy to play, but she's really a really good dog for our family."

Fur Ball Logo
It might seem like a long way off, but the Fur Ball Committee has been hard at work for months already.

Committee members have been planning the menu, party-favors, color-schemes, music, wine, publicity, and the list goes on!  One of the Committee's biggest jobs is soliciting donations for the silent and live auction so that our guests have a wide variety of fabulous items to bid on.

We've got some great packages lined up already, but more auction items are still welcome.  If you've got a unique product or service to donate, the Committee is accepting items for auction until the end of August.  Contact Tief, director@cuhumane.org or Hattie, dev.asst@cuhumane.org.

It's also not too late to become a Fur Ball sponsor.  Sponsors receive tickets to the Fur Ball, an ad in the Auction program, and event recognition.  For sponsorship levels and details on becoming a Fur Ball sponsor, click here.

We hope you'll join us at the Fur Ball for good food, good wine, and good company--for a great cause!
