From the Executive DIrector

Dear Friends,

For several years, the last Tuesday in February has been designated as "Spay Day U.S.A.," and February has been designated "Spay and Neuter Month" by many humane societies and animal welfare groups.  CCHS applauds these efforts.  We join others in raising awareness of pet overpopulation and promoting the benefits of spaying and neutering companion animals.

As many of you know, last year CCHS took part in an effective collaboration with other area agencies to make spay/neuter surgeries available to low income cat owners.  Our two Cat Nip/Tuck Day clinics were quite successful and rendered approximately 400 cats incapable of reproduction.  The first low-cost clinic of the New Year will be held in late February or early March, with one clinic per month to be held thereafter.  These monthly clinics will serve fewer cat-owners than the two massive clinics held in 2008.  Over time, the monthly-clinic plan promises to be both sustainable and effective.

I hope you'll help us spread the word about the importance of spaying and neutering dogs and cats.  If you need some talking points, check out these Top 10 Reasons to Spay or Neuter Your Pet at the ASPCA's website.

As always, thank you for your continued support of our cause!

Very truly yours,
Tief
CCHS Executive Director

Proposed Laws Target Puppy Mills and Dog Fighting in Illinois
Illinois State Representatives John Fritchey (D-Chicago) and Dan Kotowski (D-Mount Prospect) are co-sponsors of legislation (HB 198/SB 53; Chloe's Bill) that would impose regulations on commercial dog breeders.  Among other things, the law would ensure that large-scale breeders provide each dog with adequate space, a suitable surface on which to stand or rest, and access to an outdoor run.  It also mandates that dogs in such facilities be seen by a veterinarian yearly.

In addition, Chloe's Bill contains a provision that requires pet store owners and commercial breeders to disclose information regarding a dog's health and origin to potential purchasers.

Another new law under consideration is House Bill 69 (HB 69), which will make it a felony to be a spectator at any dog fight in the state of Illinois.

If you would like to see these bills become law, contact your State representatives and senators and urge them to support these bills.
Featured Alum:  Abel is a true companion cat
Picture of AbelWhen Carol McClaine went to the CCHS web site in the summer of 2007 to search the available cats, she was still mourning a pet she had lost to congestive heart failure a month earlier.

"There was something in [Abel's] picture that reminded me of my other white cat, so I had to come in and see him," she said.

What she found was a 10-year-old, 17-pound, white cat who couldn't get enough love and attention.

Today, Abel lives in a warm, loving home with Carol and her husband, Jeff, and their other cats. Carol and Jeff also take Abel to a local nursing home to visit Carol's mother and the other residents, who appreciate Abel's generous affections and look forward to his visits.

"It is no exaggeration to say that everyone loves Abel," Carol said. "I can't say enough about how much Abel has not only helped make our lives better but has influenced others. Adopting an older pet from the Humane Society is such a wonderful experience. I would recommend it to everyone."

Pet of the Month: Freedom

Picture of FreedomFreedom is a beautiful white and gray longhaired cat. She is four years old and has been at the shelter since August of last year. She is front declawed, and currently lives in a communal room with several other cats.

Freedom loves to snuggle, and likes nothing better than curling up in your lap and snoozing away.  Freedom also loves to sit in the window and watch the birds and squirrels outside; it's so much better than TV!
Employee of the Month: Johnny Lucas
Picture of Johnny LucasJohnny has worked in Animal Care at CCHS for just a few months and has been outstanding!  Johnny consistently takes extra steps to ensure that his jobs are done to perfection.  He also takes the initiative on new projects.  For example, Johnny has done a magnificent job of reorganizing storage and work areas.

Johnny is an affable co-worker who appreciates a good practical joke.  Be wary of any winning lottery tickets his gives you.

Thank you, Johnny, for your dedication, attitude and compassion.
Volunteers of the Month: Denny and Carol Miller
Picture of AbelDenny and Carol are new maintenance volunteers at CCHS.  So far this winter, they've mounted a giant dry-erase board for the dog-socializing program, repaired broken cabinets and minor leaks, mounted coat hooks in the break room, replaced our broken mail box, shoveled snow and ice, and discovered that we have been inadvertently providing shelter to wild animals in our attic!  Carol has also joined our team of volunteer telephone receptionists.

We deeply appreciate Denny and Carol's willingness to assist us with building maintenance and repairs.  Thank you Denny and Carol.  We're so lucky to have your help!
Special Mentions
In the last few months, many of the CCHS volunteers and staff have gone far beyond the call of duty, and we want to recognize a few of them.

Candace McMaster and Karen Simmons did an amazing job getting the laundry situation under control.

Jodi Peterson raised $570 for CCHS by collecting donations at Christmas.

Debby Borg and Cindy Doyle put in loads of extra hours over the holiday season to help the CCHS staff and animals!

Thank you to each and every staff member and volunteer!  Because of you, we were able to find loving homes for more than 1,500 animals in 2008.

Mark Your Calendars: Share-A-Meal is March 10
As you may know, CCHS is a member of Community Shares and participates in its workplace giving program.

On March 10, several area restaurants will participate in Share-A-Meal, a fundraiser for all Community Shares-sponsored organizations.  Eat at one of the participating restaurants and a percentage of the proceeds will go to Community Shares.  In addition, diners may designate a portion of their bill to CCHS.

This year, CCHS will again have an informational table set up at Kennedy's at Stone Creek in Urbana.  Please stop by to visit us and enjoy a great meal for a great cause.

Proceeds earned from the Share-A-Meal fundraiser will help CCHS in our animal sheltering, education, and adoption efforts.  It's also a great way for volunteers, shelter staff and donors to join each other in a social setting.
