Dear Friends,
I know it's clich to say it, but I can't believe the holiday season is here already! Before we start decking the halls, I'd like to take a moment to look back on the Fall season and acknowledge the contributions of our friends and supporters. Thanks go out to all the hearty volunteers who worked the U of I football games. Working in the CCHS concession stand or as stadium ushers, these folks gave up a good part of a Saturday (more than one for many of them) to help us keep food in the bowls at the shelter. Many thanks to all! Thanks to all who helped out with our both our Kitten Showers! Lincoln Square Mall and Prairieland Feeds were generous hosts and our CCHS volunteers were fabulous caretakers and adoption counselors. Thanks too, to all those who made donations and gave homes to our kittens. Additional thanks to our team of tireless Buster Biscuit bakers, dog and cat toy makers, and vendors. The CCHS booth at the Chris Cringle Craft Fair was very popular with the shoppers. And finally, thanks to all the boys and girls who have been collecting donations for CCHS in lieu of accepting gifts at their birthday parties. The generosity of these young philanthropists is inspiring.
Happy holidays and best wishes to you and your animal companions.
Very truly yours, Tief CCHS Executive Director

Pet of the Month - Theodora
Meet Theodora!
She is a gentle soul who loves to have her head stroked. She also enjoys toys that she can toss around. Rabbits can be excellent household pets; they are generally clean and can be quite affectionate.
Rabbits can be litter box-trained and Theodora would be an excellent candidate for this, as she is quite tidy. She would do just fine with nice dogs and cats.
Theodora is looking for a forever home where she can be part of the household-no backyard hutch for this lovely girl!

Employee of the Month - Samantha Miller
Although a new addition to the CCHS crew, Sam has already valuable member of the team! Her willingness to learn new things, assist other departments, and help our patrons make the best matches possible make Sam a stand-out employee. She is constantly coming up with ideas to help CCHS grow and become better, and she's not afraid to suggest changes to the status quo. Thank you, Sam, for all you do at CCHS!

Volunteer of the Month - Barbara Meyer
Barb has been a CCHS volunteer since 1975 and served on the Board of Directors for more than two decades (1978-2000). But what has she done for us lately? It's a long list. Barb's perpetual assignment is as the CCHS Web Mistress. She keeps the website updated and fresh, and never complains when she is bombarded (be it daily or hourly) with new material for the homepage and the calendar. Recently, Barb has gone above and beyond in helping to bring the CCHS monthly electronic newsletter to life. She is solely responsible for the layout and managing the E-mailing list. Without Barb's help, the E-newsletter would still be just an idea and a hope. Barb also perpetually works on the CCHS historical archives. About Barb Meyer's contributions to CCHS, Tief had this to say: "Barb has been absolutely invaluable to me during my first year as Executive Director. I have turned to her countless times with questions on CCHS history and past relationships. She also helps me out with internet research and exploring on-line fundraising opportunities. I ask Barb for help with something almost every single day and I appreciate her dedication and helpfulness enormously." Thank you, Barb!

Alum of the Month - Grover (formerly Champ)
"You know a dog belongs in your family when you can't remember life without him."
That's what the Fredricksons said when we asked them how things are going with their new dog, Grover. Grover was known as "Champ" at CCHS, until he was adopted in October of this year and joined the Fredrickson family. In addition to two loving parents, Grover now has a canine brother, Chester.
At bed time, Grover and Chester get up on the bed for some belly-rubs and good-night petting. But when Mom is ready for lights out, she says "on your bed" and Grover knows it's time to jump down and curl up on his own bed for the night. Grover's other favorite place to sleep is on the Ottoman in the living room. From there, he can quickly move to the comfy chair or the couch, or he can hop down and see what Chester is barking at. Grover is very proud of the fact that he is now known as the "good dog" in the house. Grover thinks he should be a lap dog, and will climb on anything in his way to get onto a human lap. In fact, Grover is not even discouraged when the lap is already taken by brother Chester. I believe the technical term for Grover's signature move is "piling on." (pictured at the link below) Grover's leash walking has improved a great deal. The Fredricksons are using a Gentle Leader (a head halter that many dog trainers recommend) and they're planning to take both dogs to a training class this winter. Because of Grover's amazing temperament, they're hoping that Grover will earn his Canine Good Citizen certification, and then enter a therapy-dog training class. It sounds like Grover has a bright future ahead of him!
