America in Bloom Spotlighted on "Across the Fence"

Research Proves"Across the Fence," the nation's longest-running daily farm and home television program, produced by The University of Vermont (UVM) Extension, spotlighted the AIB program in a recent episode. Leonard Perry, Ph.D, AIB judge, and UVM extension professor, was the subject of a 45-minute interview about the benefits of the AIB program. In the interview Dr. Perry takes viewers through photo tours of four communities throughout the United States that have felt the positive impact of the AIB program.

A Beautiful City on the Ohio River

Research ProvesBy Ed Rhinehart, AIB volunteer
Over several years, I have had the opportunity to visit many cities as a judge in the America in Bloom program. I often wonder what has happened with this city or that city. Have they ever used any of the suggestions or ideas that the judges gave them? Was the written report useful or even looked at? Last fall when my wife and I were driving from Florida to Ohio, we were able to stop at one of these cities, Gallipolis, Ohio. I was so pleased with what we saw!

AIB Becomes Member of National Organization that Advocates for Trees

America in Bloom recently became a member of the Sustainable Urban Forests Coalition (SUFC), a Washington, DC-based organization that assembles national organizations working to advance a unified urban forest agenda for communities across the country. Although the functions and benefits of urban forests are becoming increasingly clear, there is a lack of understanding about the full range of urban forests within a community's infrastructure. Coalition members work together to educate and advocate for better maintained and expanded urban forests nationwide with a unified national voice.

AIB board member Michael V. Geary, CAE, attended last month's SUFC annual meeting and advocacy day during which he and other SUFC members spent time lobbying members of Congress on various proposals that will invest in parks and urban forests.

2011 AIB Symposium & Awards

October 6-8, 2011
Washington, D.C.

The annual symposium and awards event is more than just awards. It is a educational event developed specifically for communities to help them succeed in their beautification efforts.

This year's symposium offers three days packed with excitement! Not only does it offer great educational sessions to help you drum-up participation in your community, but you'll have the opportunity to hear from White House Chief Florist, Laura Dowling as she presents "Flowers at the White House."

How Trees Pay Us Back - National Tree Benefit Calculator

The Tree Benefit Calculator allows anyone to make a simple estimation of the benefits individual street-side trees provide. This tool is based on i-Tree's street tree assessment tool called STREETS. With inputs of location, species, and tree size, users will get an understanding of the environmental and economic value trees provide on an annual basis.

Recognition
By Marvin Miller, AIB President

"Don't worry when you are not recognized, but strive to be worthy of recognition." Abraham Lincoln

As America in Bloom celebrates the year of its 10th anniversary, the Board of Directors, our judges, our volunteer staff, and our countless other volunteers have been extremely busy preparing for the contest, conducting webinars, planning for the 10th Anniversary Symposium & Awards Program (October 6-8 in Washington, DC), preparing for yet another edition of our Best Ideas Book, and doing the many things we always do: spreading the word about our program and about the value of plants to cities and their residents.
