Engaging a Local AIB Committee & Developing a Community Profile Book
This webinar is designed for participating towns and those who are considering participating next year. You'll learn from two experienced judges how to pull together a committee that will drive the America in Bloom program in your town, who should be on the committee and why, and a committee structure.

You'll also get pointers on how to use the AIB Word template to create your very own Community Profile book and how it has many uses beyond informing the AIB judges. The webinar is free, so register today!

Interactive Grants - See What Other Communities Are Up To & Submit Your Project

Rain Bird Grants

The Intelligent Use of Water Awards is an interactive grant program that awards funds to water conservation and environmental sustainability projects that promote green spaces. A global initiative, any Internet user can submit a project via the Intelligent Use of Water Awards web site at www.iuowawards.com and promote it within his or her own community.

All projects can be anonymously voted upon by visitors (one vote a day per project, per individual user), and the projects with the most votes will receive funding from Rain Bird according to their funding category. There are currently 81 projects seeking funding. See if there is one near you!

A Volunteer a Day

By Marvin Miller, AIB President

Volunteers"Work consists of whatever a body is obliged to do, and play consists of what a body is not obliged to do." -The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

For many communities, success in their America in Bloom efforts can be tied directly to the ability to recruit and keep their voluntary workforce. Indeed, one of our eight judging criteria is labeled Community Involvement, suggesting the importance of this effort. And we often get a lot of questions on how to best recruit the required volunteers. Probably a standard approach to getting the needed manpower is to cast a wide net.
Involving the municipal government, the business community, and a city's residents is important, especially since the judging evaluation for this, and all other criteria, awards points for each of these constituent groups. Yet, each of these groups ultimately needs to help recruit volunteers. So, the net that a city must ultimately cast needs to include every possible opportunity.

A Garden Army in U.S. Schools?

Most folks have heard of Victory Gardens, but have you ever heard of the United States School Garden Army? With the support of the Federal Bureau of Education the United States School Garden Army mobilized children for relief gardening. This effort continued after the war through the Great Depression, morphing into the Victory Garden program during WWII. Unfortunately, after WWII school gardening efforts fell to the wayside.

These facts and other interesting historical tidbits were shared by Rose Hayden-Smith, a garden-based learning specialist and blogger at Kitchen Gardeners. Check it out.

The Quest to Make Gardening Child's Play

The Northwest Flower and Garden Show, a large consumer gardening show in Seattle, Washington aimed to capture the enthusiasm and imagination of young green fingers. The five-day floral extravaganza is slightly smaller than the Philadelphia Flower Show, but still the biggest horticultural event of its kind on the West Coast.

The most significant message at this year's show is that the gardening community needs to do much more to capture the imagination and enthusiasm of children, for the beauty of plants and gardens as well as the importance and value of nature and the environment in general. Read more.

America in Bloom Displays at Spring Trials

Is there a town in your market that would be a perfect candidate for a beautification program? Imagine the fabulous varieties showcased by breeders at the California Spring Trials planted in medians, planters, hanging in baskets on Main Street, parks and residential gardens. What would that mean for your business?

America in Bloom will have an informational display at the Plug Connection Spring Trial location, March 26 - April 1, 2011. Also exhibiting at the site are Plug Connection, Suntory Flowers, Benary, and Cultivaris.

Stop by and learn how participating in AIB can help you grow your garden center/nursery business by engaging people to embrace beautification and landscaping as a way to improve the quality of life in your town. Celebrating its 10th year, the America in Bloom program has engaged nearly 200 towns and cities in 38 states. Three AIB cities on the Spring Trials trek are Encinitas (Ecke Ranch), Lompoc (Floranova), and Arroyo Grande (Greenheart Farms). Many of the Spring Trials hosts and attendees are America In Bloom stewards. Consider becoming one yourself. Plant pride and prosper.
