Market Update

We've reached the height of the summer season and the market is full of seasonal favorites, like fresh peaches, marionberries, basil, cherry tomatoes and more.  And soon, you'll start seeing everything you need to start your winter garden.  Don't let the season pass you by!

Dragonfly Forge sharpeners will be in the market this week.  So bring your knives!  Hammer & Tuffy Granola and Masala Pop (Indian Spiced Popcorn) are also joining us this week.  Mocha Roma Coffee Company is on vacation but will be back next week to serve up your espresso drink.

You've probably seen the volunteer Hollywood Gleaners collecting food at the end of the market each week, but you might not know that this food goes to feed low-income seniors in the Hollywood area.  The program has really taken on a life of it's own and this year, they have collected twice as much food as this time last year!  Now, to store all that food, the Gleaners are raising money to buy a commercial refrigerator.  Click here to find out how you can support this amazing program!

pie that hearts pdxDon't forget: HFM's 3rd Annual Summer Pie Contest is next week, Saturday, August 4th You can find the contest guidelines here on our website, or stop by the Information Booth on the corner of 44th and Hancock during the market to pick up an entry form (points are awarded for deliciousnesscreativity, visual appeal, and use of local ingredients). If you're concerned about your berries or stone fruit lasting through the week, the Information Booth also has information about mid-week farmers markets! Remember: the pie contest needs you to make it happen! Happy baking!

See you at the Market!

Starting Your Winter Garden
Anne Berblinger
Gales Meadow Farm
Right after the Summer Solstice, weeks before the tomatoes are ripe, it is already time to think about the winter garden and vegetables which will produce for you all winter long and even into the spring.

At Gales Meadow Farm, we started seeds for six kinds of kale, yellow cabbage collards, and several kinds of broccoli the first week of July. We will have these at the market July 28- August 11.

We will start fall beets, turnips, and hardy lettuce in August, and they will be available at the market toward the end of August and in early September.

These vegetables do not like to stay in pots once they are ready for transplanting, so they will be available for a limited time. Other fall and over-wintering vegetables are direct-seeded; we will have seeds we harvest at our farm for favas and cress in September.

Garlic is planted in October and harvested in July. We will have about 30 varieties of garlic (a lot of some varieties, a little of others) at the market, starting this week with Polish and Belorus. Each variety will be available for a few weeks, so you will need to plan ahead and buy the kinds you want to grow as they become ready for sale. Then store them in a cool, dry, airy place until planting time when the ground is cooler in mid or late October. We have a list of our garlic varieties on our website. If there is a specific variety you want (more than a few bulbs), please e-mail us at meadow@coho.net. We can set it aside for you and you can pick it up at the market when it is ready.

Anne BerblingerWe will have planting tips for winter veggies on our website, and we look forward to seeing you at the Hollywood Farmers Market!
The Ultimate Peach Pie
Robert Reynolds Chef Studio
Peach PieFor the ultimate peach pie:  Cut peaches into thick slices and place in bowl.  Mix together 1/2 cup sugar and 2-3 Tbsp flour.  Toss with the peaches until well combined. Add 1/2-3/4 cup heavy cream.

Make (or buy if you must) a double pie crust. Put one crust in a pie pan and fill it with the peach mixture.  Roll out the top crust and use a water glass to cut a big circle in the center.  Place the crust on top of the pie and crimp the edges together. Bake at 375˚ in the lower third of the oven for the first 15 minutes, then lower temperature to 350˚ for another 45 minutes or so. Try to let it cool before you devour it.
