Market Update

Knowing where your food comes from, is what farmers' markets are all about.  To that end, we recently visited Deck Family Farm, to learn more about the meat they bring to market.  Check out this video vendor profile, the first of this new series, and meet farmers Christine and John Deck.

Summer Pie Contest - Saturday August 4th!
pie D As you've no doubt noticed, we're into the heart of summer at the market, and for the next few weeks will be enjoying the rich harvest of local berries and other fresh fruit at the market. And one of the best things about summmer is fruit pie, which is why we're happy to announce our 3rd Annual Summer Pie Contest!

In the past, this contest has been called the "berry pie contest", but we have no desire to discourage people from submitting peach/cherry/apricot/etc pies. Whatever piece of fresh fruit stokes your creativity, go with it.

four types of berries Pies entered for judging must be made with berries or other fruit purchased fresh. Fruit does not need to come from the Hollywood Farmers Market, but there will be extra points for buying locally-grown ingredients. One tip for mid-week purchasing - you can buy berries and other fruit at the Lloyd Farmers Market on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 2 pm. You'll see many familiar HFM vendors there, such as Unger Farms (Tuesdays) Liepold Farms (Thursdays), and ProFarm Produce (Thursdays).

Pie crust and filling must be prepared and baked by person submitting the pie for judging.

Entries must include entry form and original recipe listing all ingredients and method in order to be considered for judging.

We can't guarantee that pie plates will be returned to contestants, so we encourage contestants to submit pies in a recyclable pie plate.

All pies submitted for judging become the property of the Hollywood Farmers Market and may not be returned to you in time for dessert.

Entries will be accepted from 8am until 10am on the morning of Saturday, August 4th. Judging will begin promptly at 10:30am, with winners announced at 12:00 noon.

Josta Berries

Sun Gold Farm

Josta (pronounced "yusta") berries are a cross between a black currant and goose berry.  They're very popular in Scandanavia (many folks who had shopped at farmers markets in Europe recognize them), and are great in a chutney or in addition to other berries as they tend to be on the tart side.  Treat them like rhubarb - add sugar!

Yak Meat

Pine Mountain Ranch

Did you know yak meat regularly wins taste tests as the best tasting ground meat in the world? With 78% less fat than beef and tons of flavor, whenever yak is taste tested against other ground meats, it wins - 9 out of 10 prefer it! In addition to ground yak, Pine Mountain Ranch also has yak steaks.

Costata Romanesco Zucchini

Gales Meadow Farm

This week Gales Meadow Farm will be bringing Costata Romanesco Zucchini.  It is "the best" zucchini - less watery, more flavor, no bitterness, and it remains tender at a much larger size (more bang for your buck!)

Red Huckleberries

Nature's Wild Harvest

Look for Red Huckleberries this week!  They're wild picked and in short supply, so come early.  Also in a couple of weeks, look for Black Cap Raspberries - also wild picked.

Radicchio

Persephone Farm

A relative of chicory and endive, this red-leafed vegetable is popular among local restaurant chefs. Grill or braise it with some balsamic vinegar, or just cut it up for salad.
