Market Updates

This Saturday is Opening Day! We will be in our full spread along NE Hancock Street between 44th & 45th Avenues. Come ready to fill up that market basket.
8am - 1pm!

Now that we are a year-round market,   Opening Day seems to mean something a little different. It's now when we look forward to tasting the first produce of the season and expanding to include even more of the great local foods we love.  We were so happy to keep you connected with many of your favorite farmers and local food producers this winter and now you can revisit the ones you missed the most.

During our April markets, we were able to offer a variety of local foods, chard mixincluding meats, cheeses, seafood, winter produce, pastries (some gluten free!), eggs, mushrooms and more!

Plus over 50 varieties of garden starts and nursery plants. You can expect all that and much more this Saturday with over 50 vendors joining us for

Opening Day.

Many of your favorite market vendors are returning for the 2012 season. Most will be where you remember them, but you can stop by the Info Booth to take a look at the most recent market map to find out where your favorite farmer is set up. And while you're there, check out our new Hollywood Farmers Market t-shirts!

New vendors this season include 2 Fruits, serving fresh juice and smoothies, N&N Amaro Produce and Scoop, handmade ice cream using local ingredients. We are also happy to welcome back Nature's Wild Harvest, Camas Country Mills and Sage & Sea, all who came to HFM late last season.

We also have a number of on-call vendors that we're pretty excited about this season. You won't see all of these vendors at the market each week, but we fit them in when we can. Please be sure to give a big welcome and your support to these folks who make the extra effort to be at the market on short notice: The Better Bean Company, Abby's Table, Inspired Salts, Fatdog Mustard, Pacific Northwest Kale Chips, Hammer & Tuffy's Granola, Wild Wines, Hello! Salsa, Masala Pop & Pieku.

Lastly, we want to tell you about a Wine Tasting at Grocery Outlet this Saturday.  They have some amazing deals and a great selection of wines from the Pacific Northwest and across the globe. Their tasting will be from 2-4pm this Saturday, please consider stopping by!

See you at the market!
Fresh Fund Program Continues in 2012

The Hollywood Farmers Market is very happy to announce that we will be continuing Fresh Funds, our nutrition incentive program for SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) participants at the market. Every week, SNAP recipients are offered a dollar-for-dollar match up to $5 to spend on eligible products such as produce, meat, seafood, cheese, edible plant starts, and some baked goods.

We are extremely grateful to New Seasons Market for generously donating to this program for the third year, and to the Hollywood Farmers Market board for authorizing market funds so we can commit to offering this program for the full May-November regular season.

According to the Oregon Hunger Task Force, Oregon "placed second highest among all states for a high percentage of hungry people" during the recent recession.

Over the past two seasons, the Fresh Funds program has distributed more than $15,000 to neighbors in need. In turn, this program also supports our local economy. Through increased use of SNAP benefits at farmers markets, federal dollars that might otherwise be spent elsewhere go directly into the hands of our region's small farms and food producers. From helping out our neighbors to helping out our farmers, every facet of this program contributes to the success of our regional food economy and healthy urban neighborhoods.

Tip of the Week

Basil should not be planted outside until the nights are staying above 60F. In NE Portland, that means the middle of June at the earliest. If it is planted out sooner, it will not grow vigorously and will be extremely vulnerable to slugs.

If you do buy a basil plant at the market earlier, leave it in its pot or transplant it to a bigger pot, leave it in a sunny spot outside during the day, and take it inside at night. If you have a greenhouse or a south-facing window, you can keep it inside until the nights are warm enough.
