Market Updates | This Saturday should be a gorgeous and sunny Oregon summer day. It will be the last Saturday for THINK Unique Gardens until Saturday, August 20th. Suzanne needs her annual summer break but will return in mid-August with superior garlic, heirloom tomatoes, and amazing peppers and eggplants, not to mention her highly sought-after eggs. Sun Gold Farm will have their super delicious Tulameen raspberries for another week, but this may be the last chance to pick up a pint of the seriously sweet and fragrant berries. Eggplant has started to make an appearance at the market! Be sure to check out Deep Roots Farm for your first summer taste of eggplant.
The sorely missed Happy Campers Gluten Free Bakery returns to the market this Saturday along with Confectionery and Sage & Sea Farms.
Urban Food Code Discussion Tonight in Hollywood Recognizing the connections between food and the community's environmental, economic and physical health, the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) has initiated a project to update zoning code regulations to promote traditional and emerging ways of producing and distributing food.
The Concept Report is available and summarizes activities associated with growing, selling, and buying healthful food in our neighborhoods. Public feedback at this stage of the project is important and will be used as new zoning code regulations are developed this fall.
Please consider attending tonight's discussion at the Hollywood Senior Center, 1820 NE 40th Avenue, from 6pm to 8:30pm. After a lively discussion on food production in the city, you can walk two short blocks to the Hollywood Theatre for the final showing of Farmageddon, "the story of small, family farms that were providing safe, healthy foods to their communities and were forced to stop". Click here more information on the film and the historic Hollywood Theatre.
Attention bakers: Please remember our 2nd Annual Summer Pie Contest is quickly approaching on Saturday, August 6th! See below for contest rules and details and check out the Tip of the Week to the right for a suggestion on Peach Pie!

Summer Pie Contest - Saturday, August 6!
|
As you've no doubt noticed, we're into the heart of summer at the market, and for the next few weeks will be enjoying the rich harvest of local berries and other fresh fruit at the market. And one of the best things about summmer is fruit pie, which is why we're happy to announce our 2nd Annual Summer Pie Contest!
Last year this contest was called the "berry pie contest", but we have no desire to discourage people from submitting peach, cherry, apricot, etc. pies. Whatever piece of fresh fruit stokes your creativity, go with it.
The pie contest will be held at the market on Saturday, August 6th, so pick out some fruit or berries this week at the market for practice! Remember, the pie contest needs you to make it happen. Points will be awarded for deliciousness, creativity and visual appeal. Happy baking!
· Pies entered for judging must be made with berries or other fruit purchased fresh. Fruit does not need to come from the Hollywood Farmers Market, but there will be extra points for buying local fruit. Ask at the information booth for more details on mid-week farmers markets.
· Pie crust and filling must be prepared and baked by person submitting the pie for judging.
· Entries must include entry form and original recipe listing all ingredients and method in order to be considered for judging.
· Pie plates will not be returned to contestants, so we encourage contestants to submit pies in a recyclable pie plate.
· All pies submitted for judging become the property of the Hollywood Farmers Market and may not be returned to you in time for dessert.
· Entries will be accepted from 8am until 10am. Judging will begin promptly at 10:30am, with winners announced at 12:00 noon.

Peach Pie - For the ultimate peach pie: Cut peaches into thick slices and place in bowl. Mix together 1/2 cup sugar and 2-3 Tbsp flour. Toss with the peaches until well combined. Add 1/2-3/4 cup heavy cream. Make (or buy if you must) a double pie crust. Put one crust in a pie pan and fill it with the peach mixture. Roll out the top crust and use a water glass to cut a big circle in the center. Place the crust on top of the pie and crimp the edges together. Bake at 375˚ in the lower third of the oven for the first 15 minutes, then lower temperature to 350˚ for another 45 minutes or so. Try to let it cool before you devour it.
