Market Updates
oregon trail token pileAs many of you know, every Saturday, SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) customers can use their EBT card at the market to withdraw tokens to spend on fresh local food. The Fresh Funds Program of the Hollywood Farmers Market matches up to $5 in EBT purchases to help increase the purchasing power of SNAP recipients and reward healthy eating. This program was made possible through a generous grant from New Seasons Market. However, we have only $300 dollars left in matching funds for SNAP customers. Nobody guessed how wildly successful this program would be with EBT token sales up nearly 200% from two years ago. So far this season we've matched over $2700 and sold over $9000 in EBT tokens.

We need your help to keep the match going! Please consider making a donation next time you're at the market. Stop by the Information Booth on NE 44th & Hancock. Our crowd counts are over 4,000 every week. If every customer donated just $1, we could make the match last through the end of the season. You may also consider attending one of our preserving classes this season - all proceeds will go to the Fresh Funds Program. Whatever you can afford, we thank you!!!

Do you like pie? Consider yourself a pretty decent baker? Well consider entering Berry Pie Contest to be held on August 7th. See the details below.

There is a rumor that there will be corn at the market this Saturday! While it cannot be confirmed, we do know that  Sweet Leaf Farm will have plenty of Early Girl and other slicerslicer tomatoes tomatoes at the market this week as well as a lot of basil. Pair it with Jacobs Creamery mozzarella for a Caprese Salad that can't be beat. Persephone has delicious kohlrabi and last week sold a delectable head of lettuce that weighed nearly three lbs! With the hot weather approaching, it sounds like salad season at the Hollywood Farmers Market!

Don't forget about the design charrette tonight at 7pm at the Hollywood Senior Center, 1820 NE 40th Ave.

See you at the Market!

four types of berriesAs you've no doubt noticed, we're into the heart of berry season at the market, and for the next few weeks will be enjoying the rich harvest of local berries at the market. And one of the best things about berry season is berry pie, which is why we're happy to announce our 1st Annual Berry Pie Contest!

The pie contest will be held at the market on Saturday, August 7, but why not pick out some berries this week at the market to get some practice? Remember, the pie contest needs you to make it happen. Whether you have the recipe that won your Aunt Ethel the blue ribbon in the state fair, or you've never baked a pie before, your pie will be welcomed and adored at the Berry Pie Contest. Points will be awarded for deliciousness, creativity and visual appeal. Happy baking!
