Market Updates
It should be another sunny Saturday in Hollywood this weekend and there is a lot going on at the market.

Liepold Farm starts their season with strawberries and raspberries this Saturday. Maryhill Orchards also begins with the season's first cherries and Thompson Farm starts their season with berries and veggies.

This year's first Cooking Demonstration is this Saturday with chef Blake Van Roekel at 9:45 am & 10:45 am with music by John Twist. See the article below for more information about Blake and what's cooking at the market Saturday.

Also this Saturday is a Blood Drive with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and Oregon Red Cross - please consider donating. The Blood Mobile will be located on 44th Avenue near the west entrance to the market.

Cooking Demo Chef: Blake Van Roekel

At age 14, Blake Van Roekel wrote her first cookbook. Though it never quite reached the public eye, her passion for food and feeding people stayed true. Subsequent journals that traversed careers in horticulture, arts & event management, and jewelry design always had recipes scribbled in the margins.

In 2007, Blake's recipes moved from the margins to the center of the page. She graduated from an intensive course in "Culinary Heaven" with chef Robert Reynolds, whereupon she co-founded the successful and popular Art+Palate Supper Club. In November of 2008, Blake launched her company, Keuken, in order to officially cook up a storm. Many of her menus are inspired by art and design, literature and music resulting in meals that are thematic and unique to the time and place of the event. Her goal is to introduce greater levels of meaning to the food on our plates by not only stimulating our taste buds, but our emotions and intellect as well.

When Blake is not in the kitchen, or taking a break to eat chocolate, she can be found digging in the dirt. She serves on the board of the Portland chapter of Slow Food, teaches classes and is the consulting chef for Gales Meadow Farm, developing recipes while helping the vegetables grow. She is committed to the earth, her food, and the people she feeds.

This week, Blake will be demoing Garlic Scape and Ham Risotto. Cooking Demonstrations at the Hollywood Farmers Market in 2010 are coordinated in conjunction with Slow Food Portland, OR and are focused on affordable market shopping and simple meals. Demonstrations are held at 9:45 am and 10:45 am on the second Saturday of every month from June through October.

In pursuit of this goal they are hosting a blood drive at the market in partnership with the Oregon Red Cross. The charismatic Blood Mobile, the blood collection site, will be parked adjacent to the market on 44th Avenue.
