Recession Fundraising Ideas

Recession Fundraising Idea
It's all about budgets these days as people tighten their wallets. As we've discussed recently, that doesn't mean that you can't still fundraise during the recession. By providing services or entertainment, you'd be surprised at how much profit you can still have - and you'll build goodwill within the community. Try these ideas when you planning your next fundraiser:

eBay services: A lot of people are looking at streamlining their lives and selling things that they don't need anymore. However, many of those people are a little hesitant as they haven't really used eBay before. You can offer an eBay collect-and-sell service that picks up people's auction items, researches going prices, and puts them up for auction with a split of profit. In other words, you do the heavy lifting and claim some of the profit for your organization.

Fundraising movie night: Studies have shown that more people are staying in to rent movies rather than go out to them. However, people still enjoy the communal viewing experience. If you have a staff member or volunteer that has a home theater setup, you can host a fundraising community movie night. A small admissions fee and raffles can easily raise funds and there's very little overhead other than raffle prizes, popcorn, and soda.

Fundraising video game night: With so many children of the Nintendo age now adults with their own children, a community video game night can be a great night of enjoyment for people of all ages - and an effective fundraiser. This requires a little bit of legwork as you'll need a volunteer or staff member with space to host multiple TVs, people to bring their video game consoles, and volunteer TVs. However, the results can be great community fun with little overhead. From Wii games for the kids to shooting games for teens to music and sports games for adults, this type of fundraising can be fun for the whole family.

A few quotes to get you through economic turmoil -- one practical, one wise, and one humorous.

"When we have an economic downturn, people often think they need a different strategy for fundraising in a recession. The best strategy is actually the opposite of that--it's the fundraising basics you need to concentrate on."  -Curtis Deane, principal of WoodleyLion Consulting and long-time non-profit fundraiser

"As sure as the spring will follow the winter, prosperity and economic growth will follow recession." -Bo Bennet, American author

""My dog is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to 99 cents a can. That's almost $7.00 in dog money." -Joe Weinstein, American author
