Plan Ahead For 2009

It's the New Year, which means that we've all survived the stress and hectic chaos of the holidays. Now that December -- the month that statistically produces the most money for fundraisers -- is over, whPlanning 2009 Fundraisingere should your organization go from here?

Like every other business or organization facing the current recession, it's important to have a plan. It's also critical for that plan to have multiple options and contingencies. After all, you might be facing a stronger (thus, more giving) economy -- or things might be worse than you anticipate. For the record, most economic analysts predict the two more quarters of drag before things pick up again.

When it comes to fundraisers, you're dealing with two different commodities: time and money. In some cases, fundraising can focus purely on dollar contributions and in other cases, volunteer time and a barter of services can work as well.

Which brings us back to the original point -- where do you go from here? A good idea is to have a short-term and a long-term plan. In the short-term, assess your financial needs, volunteer staff, and general mood of your target fundraising audience. As different organizations interface with different people, some may be feeling more generous right now and some may be feeling stingier, so take the pulse of the people and see how that corresponds to what you need. Remember, there are creative ways to achieve goals, and it doesn't always involve raising money. Time and volunteer efforts can accomplish a lot of things.

For long-term solutions, it's best to come up with three tentative plans: one for if the economy turns around faster than expected, one if it's par for the course and one for if things seem worse than originally predicted. The good thing about having three action plans is that it gives you maximum flexibility. With more options and ideas, it's easier to pick and choose what will work for your next quarter's fundraiser based on a specific situation.

Most importantly, stay positive and keep your staff motivated! These are tough economic times for everyone, but it also reminds us that giving is always more important than receiving.

Some humorous quotes on resolutions to ring in the New Year. It's time to defy the skeptics and keep those resolutions!

"Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account."
-Oscar Wilde, British Writer

"New Year's is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls and humbug resolutions."
- Mark Twain, American Writer

"Making resolutions is a cleansing ritual of self assessment and repentance that demands personal honesty and, ultimately, reinforces humility. Breaking them is part of the cycle."
- Eric Zorn, American Journalist
