A Look Ahead At 2009
2008 has been a roller coaster ride for just about everyone.
From politics to the economy, a lot of the unexpected happened. Through it all,
hopefully your fundraising maintained steady and strong. How do you prepare for
2009 when there are so many uncertainties facing everyone? Here are a few
things to do to prepare for the New Year:
your volunteers: Even if people aren't donating as much to organizations due to
the economy, they're most likely willing to give their time. Make sure every
volunteer understands the purpose of your organization and the big-picture
mission, along with whatever benefits may come from all of the little victories
put together. Fundraising doesn't have to be purely monetary.
the markets: Recessions are tough things to predict. After all, if anyone could
do it, we wouldn't be in this mess. Still, it's easy enough to get basic
information on how things tend to be swinging, and based on both economic
trends and the mood of the country, you should be able to make a reasonable
prediction about when to invest in a more costly fundraiser. And of course, if
you're selling products (such as the ones from FastTrack Fundraising), much of
the inventory can be continuously put out until the entire inventory is gone.
ahead: Fundraising always takes planning and effort from everyone involved, but
now so more than ever. It's safe to say that 2009 will be a year of recovery in
a lot of ways. With that in mind, use smart planning to assess seasonal needs
and wants when putting together a fundraiser. Perhaps people won't be ready to
spend money on expensive Fourth-of-July Ball tickets but they could be willing
to partake in a fundraising cookout. Necessities, like car washes and food
coupons, can coincide with events and themes to benefit everyone involved.

With 2009 around the corner, here are a few quotes to

going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us." -Hal Borland, American Writer
"Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his
last drink and swore his last oath.
Today, we are a pious and exemplary community. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our
reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably
shorter than ever." -Mark Twain, American Writer
"Resolve to make at least one person happy every day,
and then in ten years you may have made 3,650 persons happy, or brightened a
small town by your contribution to the fund of general enjoyment." -Sydney
