Home, Hearth, and Fundraising!

Thanksgiving TurkeyThanksgiving. It's the time for friends, family, and good eatin'. It's also the time when people start to feel extra generous with their time and money. Some of the biggest benefactors during this season are the local food banks; however, just like there's other ways to give, there's other ways to receive too. Here are some Thanksgiving-themed fundraisers that might just do the trick:

Pie Sale: What's the perfect way to finish up a big, hearty Thanksgiving meal? A pie, of course, be it pumpkin, apple, cherry, or whatever you might like. This is a simple fundraiser: get volunteers to bake pies and hold a sale -- easy as that. During this season, it's one of the most popular ways to raise funds.

Holiday Decoration Service: What goes up right after Thanksgiving? Christmas decorations! Christmas decorations are a joy to behold, but a pain to put up. A good fundraiser is to sell volunteer time putting up Christmas decorations for any household that wants to go beyond just a few lights in the windows. A bonus fundraiser can also include future service for taking things down after the holidays.

Turkey Raffle: Here's another food-related idea that's simple to execute. Buy a bunch of turkeys and raffle them off to the neighborhood. Get enough entrants and you'll easily be able to make a healthy profit; in addition, if you go to local supermarkets and delis, you might be able to get them to actually donate the turkey, eliminating nearly all expenses for a pure profit. Just make sure you do this early enough to actually get the turkey to the winners!

Restaurant Vouchers: Your organization may be able to partner with a local restaurant that's offering holiday meals. If you can get vouchers for meals, you can also sell them off as fundraisers. Often times, the best way to do this is to have people purchase the vouchers for donations to food banks, senior centers, or in-need organizations. That way, it's essentially the same thing as donating food to a food bank to fall in line with the spirit of the season.

Some thoughts on giving to go with the spirit of Thanksgiving

"Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men; but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude." --E.P. Powell

"Thanksgiving was never meant to be shut up in a single day."  --Robert Caspar Lintner

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."  -- John Fitzgerald Kennedy

And a parting statistic for your organization to chew on: 50% of yearly charitable donations are made between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. That means that donating is on people's mind, so strike while the iron is hot!
