Ahhhhhh August,  summer is winding down, kids need school supplies and teachers are getting lesson plans ready.  Thus this month we are offering all teachers and college students one last chance to unwind this summer.  
 
We've also included meditation information and tips to help back-to-schoolers, parents and anyone looking for a easy, free way to deal with life stressors.

Why Meditation?meditate
Crazy gas prices, falling real estate  market, poor economy...life in general.  How to do we deal?   Massage is a great stress reliever, but unfortunately not free...Meditating is.
 
Many neuroscientists have found that meditators shift their brain activity to different areas of the cortex.  Allowing brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex to move to the calmer left frontal cortex.  This mental shift decreases the negative effects of stress, mild depression and also anxiety.

 
How to Meditate 
The specific length of time is not as important as repetition and the persistence of meditating. To paraphrase, 10 minutes daily beats 15 minutes once a week.

Thoughts, emotions and sensations will creep into your mind, but don't be influenced by them.  Keep focused on your breathing.  If you are getting side-tracked with your thoughts don't worry,your efforts are not being destroyed. The key thing is to bring your attention back to breathing and continue.  Here are a few tips:
 
1. Sit or kneel comfortably.
 
2. Your hands are loose and open with the palms up, one atop the other and thumbs lightly touching.
 
3. Head is upright and eyes may be open or closed. If open they should focus on your hands or a spot nearby.
 
4. Beginning meditators should count upwards to ten on each exhale. Concentrate on breathing in a relaxed and natural way. Then begin again at one and repeat. Continue to breathe naturally and continue to focus.
 
5. Continue this for 15 minutes.
