I Have Neck and Shoulder Pain.
What else can I do?
Several of our clients suffer from chronic neck and shoulder discomfort and receive wonderful relief from massage therapy. Yet often the pain returns and the primary question we are often asked is "What else can I do?" Most of the items we will speak about is common knowledge to all but we fail to follow through with it.
1. Move!
Most have jobs that require us to sit for long hours and stare at computers. The body is not designed to sit in stagnant positions for hours on end. Muscles will be stiff and sore. Every 20 -30 min get up from the computer and stretch your neck and shoulders. Look from left to right, bring your chin to chest, then ear to shoulder.
2. Be Conscious of Your Body Position.
The shoulders tend to rise up toward the ears when we are stressed and tired. The next time you are on the phone, carrying your bag, or at the computer, make sure those shoulders are not on the rise.
3. Sleep!
If you are not sleeping, when will your body recover from the rigors of the day. If you are not sleeping because of lack of time then you have to try to make the time. If you are not able to sleep because of discomfort or distractions then you may want to take a warm soothing bath before you get into bed. The warmth of the water will relieve muscular discomforts and allow your mind to relax.
4. Exercise.
Neck and shoulder pain is often the result of overuse and fatigue. We realize you can not quit your job and relax by the beach. So get your body strong enough to deal with the 8, 9, 10 hour long computer and stress filled days. Exercise may also help you get a better night sleep.
5. Last but certainly not least... Massage!
Regular massage can help put tense, tired muscles on the right track, but it is up to you to keep them there.
