Observing the annular eclipse
|
May 20, 2012 provided a rare opportunity for students at Midland to observe a partial annular eclipse of the sun. After dinner, a curious group of students and faculty members ventured out onto Kimpton Field. Pinhole projectors or backwards binoculars were used to project the image of the sun-in-eclipse onto pieces of paper. |

 | Midland Alumnus and Author Remembered
|
| We are sad to report the passing of Gary Lewis '45. Gary poured his soul and his mind into Dominion Over Palm and Pine: Paul Squibb and His Students, an impeccably documented, beautifully written, scholarly text on Paul Squibb and the early decades of Midland School, published in 2001. Gary left us a priceless gift. By providing a clear-eyed window into Midland's past, he gave us a lantern - powered by kerosene and an abiding love for this place and its history - to illuminate Midland's present and future. - Lise Goddard, Director of Environmental Programs
Gary Lewis wrote the following about Paul Squibb, and aptly, Lewis embodied the same ideals about himself through his life's work.
"An environmentalist long before we had a word for it, he never stopped taking personal responsibility for his surroundings, immediate or remote. The assertion that one person cannot change the world seemed so pathetically silly to him that it was liable to provoke only good-natured, frowning laughter, as if the suggestion had been made teasingly, in mock ignorance. He reveled in paradox, but held one truth to be simply and always true: it matters what we do." (Dominion, 4)
