MIDLAND MINUTES

  • Junior Dance Weekend: The juniors put on an impressive array of activities over the weekend for Junior Dance Weekend. A special dinner kicked off the festivities on Friday, followed by a bonfire and the dance in the amphitheater. Saturday everyone enjoyed a beach day with games, a BBQ dinner, a cruising game and sundae bar. Finally, on Sunday, everyone was served with a restaurant-style breakfast, complete with a menu.  Great job, juniors!
  • Senior Symposium: The Class of 2012 educated the Midland community on Wednesday, May 16th with their outstanding senior thesis presentations, a culmination of all of their hard work on their senior thesis papers and projects, as well as Experiential Week internships. The senior's papers and some projects are on display in the Library. Be sure to check them out!
  • Shakespeare Outing: The Cummings family, several students, and a couple of Midland moms enjoyed a Mothers' Day production of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet by the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Santa Maria.  Student attendees included seniors Jenny Zeng and Danica Davis, with her mom, Gina Cobin; juniors Anna Moiseyeva - with her mother, Rita - Keenan Blough, Kendall Cook, Capstone He, and Ashley Johnson; and sophomore Hanqi Ran.  Jenny, Capstone, and Hanqi all enjoyed seeing Shakespeare on stage for the first time.
  • Horse Schooling Fun: The Spring sports season has provided our more advanced riders with an invaluable learning opportunity; the opportunity to learn the basics of horse training and schooling programs. While our three newcomers to the program, Aku Nwakanma '15, Diego Marcogliese '13 and Lupita Valle '15, work diligently to grasp the basics of horseback riding our returning riders, Gillian Beery-Beesley '12, Becca Rantanen '12, India Salter '13, and Turner Schroth '15 have been working with our new and greener horses, Tota, Wilbur, Memphis, Nari and Paschen. This schooling opportunity is not limited to the current horse program students. Sunny Pang '14 and Gabriella Rocco '14 have also been able to work with some of these horses. The riders are working with their horses both mounted and on the ground.
  • UCSB Tour: On Tuesday, students from the 9th, 10th, and 11th grades joined Lynda and Ian Cummings for a visit with admissions counselors at the University of California at Santa Barbara, followed by a tour of the campus led by a current UCSB student. Midland students attending were juniors Brian Bell, Keenan Blough, Capstone He, Stephen Jiang, Emma Lichtwardt, Renata Lozito, and Anna Moiseyeva; sophomores Thomas Brand and Omavi Quadir; and freshman Talei Cody.
  • Leather Belt Making: Second and third generation saddle makers, Juan Sr. and Juan Lara Jr. welcomed Midland students into their bustling shop in Santa Ynez for another afternoon of leather working.  Talei Cody '15, Wallis Cooley '15, Shaie Gordon '12, Jordan Swidenbank '15, and Lupita Valle '15 created hand-stamped belts, dog collars, and leather bracelets. Former Midland faculty member Carlos Ortiz's son, Miguel, stopped by and hung out with us as well.  Local colorful character (and dog and horse trainer) Jack Vance swung through and talked to us about dogs, two-steppin', and draft horses. Juan Sr. also took a look at some of Midland's antique saddles and told us a little bit about their history.  Another great day at Juan Lara Saddlery!
  • Pizza in the Garden: The Family School Purple Door students (4th and 5th graders) came to Midland on Friday for Make-Your-Own Pizza in the Midland Garden, followed by a brief tour of Middle Yard. Family School 5th grader Emily Cummings (daughter of Ian and Lynda) helped Director of Admissions Amy Graham give the tour to her classmates. Ben Munger '79 and Katie Isaacson provided the pizza and garden tour, while Garden Crew students Wallis Cooley '15, Brian Bell '13 and David Salehpour '14 helped entertain our guests.
