- Junior Class Leadership Retreat: The annual junior class leadership retreat began Sunday night, May 6th with a "hard luck" overnight camping trip to Tank Mesa. After breakfast Monday morning, the class spent time "reaching for their goals" on the soccer field. The class then met in Stillman to examine the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as senior leaders, and they began to agree on their class goals for next year.

Vista de las Cruces Kindergarten Class Visits Midland: On Tuesday, the Kindergarten class from Vista visited Midland. Katie Isaacson hosted them and gave them a tour of the garden, where they learned about cover crops, composting and the different vegetables we plant. They were also treated to lunch to see how our produce is used in the kitchen. They are in the process of planting their own garden. It was a very hot day, so they lined up a couple times at the garden "wash bin" to get their heads doused with water to cool off.
- Mindfulness Class Practices Day of Silence: On Tuesday, Marguerite Graham's Mindfulness class observed 8 hours of gentle silence beginning with breakfast at Ireland House and moving through classes to a silent lunch and a trip to the beach Labyrinth on the UCSB campus.
- Midland Admissions:The Admissions Office is still considering qualified candidates for grades 9-11 for the upcoming school year. Please help us spread the word by sharing your Midland story with interested friends, relatives, and colleagues. Interested applicants should contact Amy Graham, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, at admissions@midland-school.org.
- Annual Student-Run Treasure Hunt: The annual student originated treasure hunt began on Sunday. Last year's winners (Luke Carpenter '12, Phoebe Stokes '12 and Miles Dakin '13) design this year's hunt. Clues have teams exploring all over Midland's property. The hunt resumes after Junior Dance Weekend. Happy hunting!
- Laughing 'til We're Hoarse: Students and faculty who have always wanted to ride a horse, but haven't yet had the time or the chance, saddled up Max, Menja, Memphis, and Timmy Mule for some shenanigans in the arena. Seasoned riders Sunny Pang '14 and Miles Dakin '13 assisted with handling and logistics. New-to-Midland-Style-Riders Luke Carpenter '12, Peter King '12, Talei Cody '15, and Roddy and Kyle Taylor took turns trying out different horses, big and small. There was a little bit of out of control trotting, and with it, a little bit of high-pitched giggling (can you guess by who?). "Just a few more weeks of school, everyone! Let's all ride as much as we can!" says Horse Program Director Celeste Carlisle.

- Last of Lacrosse Season:
- BOYS: The Midland Boys' lacrosse team traveled to OVS on May 5th for a back to back rematch with the Spuds. The Oaks picked up right up where they left off and won, 14-5. Marcus Schmidt '12 ignited for 4 goals in the midfield while Luke Carpenter '12 notched 4 from the attack and midfield positions. Charlie Lehman '13 had ten shots on the day and scored 3 goals. Captain Peter King '12, Kendrick Holmes '12, and Micah Kalem '13 all scored 1 goal each. Goal keeper Tevita Mafi '12 had 7 saves while Irvin Alvarez '12, Merlin Plumbley '12, and Zach Dibbs '12 anchored a stingy defense. Kendrick continues to dominate the face-offs. Winning the ground ball battles and increased possession time give the Oaks opportunities to put the ball in the net. The Oaks then defeated the Dunn Earwigs 12-2 on Wednesday, May 9th. The two victories over Dunn earned Midland the Santa Ynez Valley Championship Axe for the sixth consecutive year. Charlie Lehman '13, Luke Carpenter '12 and Marcus Schmidt '12 each scored three goals. Peter King '12 netted two and Emmet Yeazell '13 notched one. Kendrick Holmes won eleven face-off's on the day. Goalie Tevita Mafi '12 had a handful of saves while Irvin Alvarez '12, Zach Dibbs '13, and Merlin Plumbley '12 were on defense. Midland has scored a school record 74 goals in 5 games. The team finishes the season with a 6-3 record. It was a great season, and the team finished right where they wanted to be!
GIRLS: The Midland Girls' lacrosse team lost to Dunn, 10-4, during the Wednesday game. Danica Davis '12 returned from an injury at the beginning of the season to score two of our goals, Gillian Hannahs '13 scored one, and Anna Moiseyeva '13 scored one. Callie Bryan '12 had a good game in goal, blocking over 12 Dunn shots. Phoebe Stokes '12 and Savannah Bryant '12 anchored the defense and had multiple runs up the field, breaking through Dunn's double and triple teams. Lily Brand '12, as Center, sprinted past Dunn's defense leaving them in her dust. Ellen Rafferty '12 led the Oaks as they attacked Dunn's goalie. Shaie Gordon '12 could not play in the game due to illness, but was a strong attack player all season, scoring many goals. We have many juniors, a few sophomores, and a lot of freshmen to take the place of our graduating seniors, and so although we will miss our senior players we look forward to next season. Many thanks to Amy Graham who came out and helped coach - she brings fun and enthusiasm to the field! - Upcoming Events at a Glance:
