Students Host Alumni/ae and Parents for a Horseback Obstacle Course: The spring horse class designed two identical obstacle courses in the arena for horses and riders to race through last weekend. Students acted as hosts for this event, and helped parents, alumni/ae, and siblings with fitting their helmets and climbing on to their mounts. Parents raced kids and alumni raced current students. The horses were wonderful hosts as well!

- Common Ground Service Club Update: At the beginning of April, the Midland Common Ground Service Club brought quart size canning jars to the town of Los Olivos in order to raise money for People Helping People. 8 local merchants agreed to house these jars and the Club has raised $100 so far. On May 1st, the Club prepared lunch for the Solvang Senior Center, thanks to a donation by Midland alum, Fred Brossy '46.
- Outdoor Leadership Trip: In the end of April, Outdoor Leadership students took a three day trip to Santa Cruz Island. Located 20 miles off the coast of Santa Barbara and part of the Channel Islands National Park, Santa Cruz is managed partly by the National Park Service and partly by the Nature Conservancy. They hiked a good portion of the trails on the Park Service land, combed the beaches, and were treated to views of Sea Lions at night seen through the bioluminescence.
- Spring Riders Become Racing Fans: Celeste and Gillian took some of the spring riders (Becca Rantanen '12, India Salter '13, Diego Marcogliese '13, Lupita Valle '15, Turner Schroth '15, and Aku Nwakanma '15) to Midland Board President and Chair Nick Alexander's '60 two thoroughbred racehorse farms in Santa Ynez and Solvang this past week. Nick was a gracious and excellent host, and we heard so many wonderful stories about the horses at the farm. Nick's ranch in Solvang hosts the playful yearlings, who tear and buck around in groups, kicking up their heels and running like wild things!
