 | Jim Quick '68 receives the John Dreyfuss '52 Distinguished Alumnus/a Award from Board President Nick Alexander '60
|

Sunny skies, 80 degree weather and a weekend filled with reunions and activities marked this year's Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends Weekend. For the reunion years alone, there were class members from '42, '52, '62, '72, '92 and '02! Jim Quick '68 was honored as the 2012 recipient of the John Dreyfuss '52 Distinguished Alumnus Award on Sunday, April 29. There isn't a building on campus that hasn't been improved by Jim and his crew. As the old assembly benches seemed to get lower and lower to the ground and sat at interesting angles, Jim came to the rescue, with some help from his crew, a couple of Midland students, and some classmates, and built new assembly benches. He has continued his tradition of adding/fixing a table or bench (or several!) as he has done for the past several years around Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends Weekend.

For the seventh year in a row, Midland faculty members and students have had a booth at the Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival. With an educational focus, we talk about Midland as well as energy and our solar installations. Although the weather was gray and chilly, we met some wonderful folks this year. |

 | | Grass Mountain Day 2012 |
Monday, April 30 was Grass Mountain Day! Right after students got to their first class, the bell was rung and the announcement made that it was "Grass Mountain Day." After bursting into song, students and faculty members packed lunches and made the trek to the top. Once there, instead of the cool breeze normally felt at the summit, the sun was beating down intensely, so shade became a priority. While it was hot, spirits were high, and the Rez was a popular place on the way back to campus! |

Silviano Valdez ' 09 joined ThinkImpact for a 6 week experience last summer learning about "asset-based development" strategies in rural Kenya. As part of his experience, he and another student developed a new model for empowering local people to address a critical need in their community -- clean water. Read Silvi's article about Vuwa Enterprise, the NGO he co-founded, and his anticipated return to Kenya this summer to continue his work.
David Starkman '68 shared a photo and story of a Passover Dinner at Midland in 1967.
David Starkman '68 makes a brief appearance as a "3D Historian" in the recently released History Channel Blu-Ray 3-D disc "World War II in 3D". He, along with his wife, Susan Pinsky, supplied a large number of German propaganda 3-D images from their personal collection that were used in this video. This documentary shows how the Nazi's used the power of 3-D images to both glorify and document their accomplishments and wartime efforts to their own ends. They also provided scans of 3-D aerial reconnaissance photos that were used by the Allies. Recent technology now makes it possible to see this in 3-D using 3-D Televisions and 3-D Blu-Ray players.
