MIDLAND MINUTES

  • ALUMNI/AE, PARENTS AND FRIENDS WEEKEND is this weekend!
    A weekend filled with activities
    - several classes will be celebrating reunions and we look forward to honoring Jim Quick '68 as the 2012 recipient of the John Dreyfuss '52 Distinguished Alumnus Award on Sunday.
  • Reminder: please bring your own chairs, blankets and umbrellas (for the sun, hopefully) for the picnic and lacrosse games on Saturday. Parents and alumni/ae are invited to try their hand at a horseback obstacle course in the arena on Saturday afternoon.
  • Note: Those who can't attend Midland's spring theatrical production during this weekend are invited to join us for a second performance of one acts by A.A. Milne, Dorothy Parker, and Thornton Wilder on Friday, May 4th, at 7:30 p.m. in the outdoor theater.
  • Earth DayFor the seventh year in a row, Midland faculty members and students were at a booth for the Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival. With an educational focus, we talked about Midland as well as energy and our solar installations.
  • APPLAUSE!!  Several Midland students placed well at the annual APPLAUSE art competition and show sponsored by Arts Outreach in Los Olivos - Keenan Blough '13 won first place, Savannah Bryant '12 won third place, and Callie Bryan '12 won an honorable mention. Their art is on display at Gallery Los Olivos until May 4. Congratulations artists!
  • Technology Talk at UCSB: On Tuesday night, faculty member Paul Gelles took seniors Peter King, Luke Carpenter, Kendrick Holmes and Marcus Schmidt, and junior Keenan Blough to see a talk by anthropologist Michael Wesch at UCSB. In "The World Remixed - How New Media Is Changing our World," Wesch talked about how new technologies are changing the ways that humans interact, and he addressed both the problems and possibilities of these technologies. They can both isolate us as individuals or interconnect us in powerful ways. Stating, "The more individualistic we become, the more we crave community," he stressed that students should learn how to create with, rather than just consume, these technologies. That is, "students should use rather than be used by them."
  • A Little Bit Cute: Another sunny day in paradise saw the horse class loading up into the Ford Excursion for a local field trip. Nothing says "spring!" like tiny foals, and there was no short supply of VERY tiny foals at Quicksilver Miniature Horse Ranch in Solvang!
  • Field Trip to Esalen: Marguerite Graham and Katie Isaacson went to the Esalen Institute in Big Sur to learn from a program that serves a similar sized community and a director who farms with volunteers and apprentices similar to Ben Munger '79 and Katie who farm with students -- and to share and explore possibilities for Midland.
  • Water Trip: Laurie Munger's "Water in the West" class (Savannah Bryant '12, Gillian Beery-Beesley '12, Lily Brand '12, Becca Rantanen '12, Miguel Provencio '13, Kendall Cook '13, and Miles Crawford '15) went to the Central Valley to observe the use of water primarily for agriculture as well as the state of the San Joaquin River Restoration project for the reintroduction of salmon. The class stayed at the Munger's house above Porterville, and then traveled to Friant Dam above Fresno, damming the San Joaquin River, then on to the Mendota Pool and Sack Dam, also located along the San Joaquin where water is diverted to large farms. They also toured a 3000-cow dairy in Tipton, and ended their tour at the Kern County Water Bank, just west of Bakersfield.  The students logged a lot of miles during the trip but were exposed to vast and complicated world of water use in the Central Valley.

  • Lacrosse:
  • BOYS: The Mighty Midland Oaks led Viewpoint School 10 -1 at the half after playing the strongest first half of lacrosse perhaps ever played in the Santa Ynez Valley. The opening face-off was eaten up by Kendrick Holmes '12; a perfect two-pass fast break from the point to Emmet Yeazell '13 led to a goal with less than a minute off the clock. Another goal from Marcus Schmidt '12 on the next possession led to a two-goal lead with only 1:30 expired in the first period. After a four-goal run by Viewpoint in the third quarter, order was quickly restored. Charlie Lehman '13 led all scorers with 8 goals, Marcus Schmidt '12 notched three; Peter King '12 tallied two. Luke Carpenter '12 scored two goals, and Thomas Brandt '14 scored his first career goal.  New shooting drills have ignited the Oaks who have scored 31 goals in two games. Ground balls, face-offs and possession time all tell the tale. Two games with OVS and one with Dunn are yet to be played.
GIRLS: Girls played, and lost to Dunn last week. The Dunn game was 9-7, with Anna Moiseyeva '13 scoring most of our goals, and Ellen Rafferty '12 scored one.  The defense (seniors Savannah Bryant, Phoebe Stokes and Selena Wrightson) played well all game and kept the team energized with their determination to not give up. Callie Bryan '12 blocked at least 12 shots, and played an aggressive game, coming out of the goal numerous times to chase loose balls and scare the Dunn attack!  Girls play Thacher tomorrow.
