- Global Warming: Thinking it Through: On Sunday evening, April 15, 2012, Dr. James L. Powell came to Midland and gave the Twelfth Annual Mason Willrich '50 Lecture on Global Environmental Issues, "Global Warming: Thinking it Through." Dr. Powell is the Executive Director of the National Physical Science Consortium, USC - RAN. Dr. Powell opened his talk stating that climate change will be the defining issue for our students in their lifetimes. Click here to read more.
- Stargazing on Kimpton Field: On Tuesday, April 17, Chuck McPartlin visited us again and gave an astronomy presentation followed by stargazing with powerful telescopes on the field. His PowerPoint presentation and encyclopedic knowledge of the universe and beyond was amazing and a lot of fun.
- New Assembly Benches: Once again, a thank you to Jim Quick '68 for improving the campus, Midland-style. As the old assembly benches seemed to get lower and lower to the ground and sat at interesting angles, Jim came to the rescue, with some help from his crew and a couple of Midland students, and built new assembly benches. He has continued his tradition of adding/fixing a table or bench (or several!) as he has done for the past several years around Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends Weekend.
- Earth Day: Midland will once again have a booth at The Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival this weekend, April 21 and 22. Several Midland students and faculty members will be at the booth to talk about Midland as well as energy and our solar installations. Midland's booth will be in the Campus Point section, booth #205, on the corner of Sola and Anacapa Streets. Come by and say hello if you plan on attending the festival!
- Alumni, Parents and Friends Weekend: April 28-29 (next weekend) marks this year's event. We'll have a weekend filled with activities, several classes will be celebrating reunions and we look forward to honoring Jim Quick '68 as the 2012 recipient of the John Dreyfuss '52 Distinguished Alumnus Award on Sunday, April 29. Please RSVP to Debbie Jones and please bring your own chairs, blankets and umbrellas (for the sun, hopefully) for the picnic and game on Saturday. Parents and alums are invited to try their hand at a horseback obstacle course in the arena this year!
Note: Those who can't attend Midland's spring theatrical production during this weekend are invited to join us for a second performance of one acts by A.A. Milne, Dorothy Parker, and Thornton Wilder on Friday, May 4th, at 7:30 p.m. in the outdoor theater. - Blog Features Midland: Courtney White, writer and co-founder of The Quivira Coalition, posted a blog about his visit to Midland and our carbon sequestration project.
- Seniors Work on Thesis Projects: As part of a graduation requirement, all Midland seniors are required to write a senior thesis paper or create a senior thesis project. Their Experiential Week internships tied into their thesis topics and they will also give presentations at a Symposium next month.
- Mountain Biking Video: Click here to see a video made by Miles Crawford '15 featuring fellow classmates Cole Lucas and Bryce Bryant mountain biking around Zaca Peak and Grass Mountain.
- Wildflowers in the Garden: Wildflowers are blooming in the upper field of the farm: Tidy Tips, California Poppies, Baby Blue Eyes, Dwarf Lupine, Chinese Houses... They were planted in November, in cooperation with The Xerces Society and the NRCS in order to provide a habitat for native pollinators, and to draw even more beneficial insects onto the farm.
- ABC Scholars: On Friday, April 20, Chris Dennis from A Better Chance (ABC) came to enjoy lunch with the 8 Midland ABC Scholars.
- Longest Standing Midland Club: Since he joined Midland's faculty in 1977, BG Kresse '68 has been holding his "Games Club" where he serves his famous popcorn and lemonade while students partake in a variety of games from cards to Jenga to video games.
- Steers on the Move: The steers at Midland are enjoying the fast-growing green grass, but they still follow Ben Munger '79 everywhere he goes if there's a bale of hay in the back of the Kubota. The spring farm crew helped load four of the steers into a trailer to bring them to the butcher on Wednesday.
- Lacrosse: After Experiential Week and April break, the Boys' lacrosse team lost to the Cate Rams 14-4 on Wednesday, April 18th. Luke Carpenter '12 notched one goal and Charlie Lehman's '13 three goal performance paced the Oaks. Captain Peter King '12 played an outstanding game in the midfield. Having only lost 6-8 in the first game, Midland was hoping that the team would pick up where they left off in March. The long break and Cate's improvement was too much for Midland to overcome. The team hopes to return to their winning ways when they play the Earwigs of Dunn on April 21st at 2:00 PM. Girls play at Dunn tomorrow at 2:00 PM.
