- Reminder About Travel for Break: Please communicate all travel arrangements to your child's advisor ASAP. Be sure to include departure and return plans. Students (freshmen and sophomores) must stay for the 6:00 PM Assembly on Friday, April 6. Departures from campus may start after Assembly on Friday, and on Saturday. As always, Midland shuttles students to Santa Barbara on Saturday only and for departures no earlier than 8:00 AM. Students must return to campus and be ready for the 6:00 PM Assembly on Sunday, April 15. To meet this requirement, arrival in Santa Barbara by 5:00 PM is essential. Thank you!
- Art Installations: The freshmen spent two weeks getting better acquainted with their surroundings during Foundations in Visual Art's annual outdoor art unit. They were charged with the task to create site-specific art installations using only natural materials. Using the work of artist Andy Goldsworthy as inspiration, each student chose to explore one of the elements of art (such as line, value, form, and color) which helped guide them along their way.
- Three Generations of Midlanders: On Thursday, John Frost '42, his son John Frost '86 and grandson Alec Frost '16 (incoming freshman next year), and Heidi (Alec's mom) visited Midland for an afternoon stroll around campus. It was a special trip down memory lane, especially for John '42.
- Applause for Art: Each year Arts Outreach in Los Olivos hosts Applause, a juried art show, for all students in the Santa Ynez Valley. This year five Midland students were chosen as finalists. They are Irvin Alvarez '12, Keenan Blough '13, Callie Bryan '12, Savannah Bryant '12 and Sunny Pang '14. The finalists will be hung at Gallery Los Olivos from 4/5 - 5/2; all other entries will be on display at the Arts Outreach Gallery. There will be a reception at both locations on Sunday, 4/22, from 12-2. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners along with Honorable Mentions will be announced at Gallery Los Olivos at 1:00 on 4/22. This coincides with our Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends Weekend, and would make a fun outing for all!

- Midland Property Trail Work: The SB Trails Council began work on improving trails in the Adobe Creek and Birabent Canyon areas. With a small machine Ray Ford and Curt Cragg are building tread, putting in rolling dips to shed water, and cutting brush on the existing trails. The emphasis of the work is to make the trails better for equestrian use, which includes signage, and to allow the public and students better riding opportunities.
- Stargazing on Kimpton Field: Chuck McPartlin has agreed to visit us again and give an astronomy presentation followed by stargazing with powerful telescopes on the field on Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 PM. His PowerPoint presentation and encyclopedic knowledge of the universe and beyond is amazing and a lot of fun.

Powell, who will give a lecture titled, "Global Warming: Thinking it Through." Click here to view Midland's list of guest speakers for the year.

- Sierra Club Summer Internship: The Sierra Club is now accepting applications for the Best Internship on Earth, an incredible opportunity to spend the summer exploring the great outdoors and documenting their journey for the Sierra Club and The North Face. Past interns have done everything from rafting the Trinity River in Northern California to rock climbing on the White House lawn. The intern will get a $2,000 gift certificate from The North Face to outfit them with all the gear they need for their summer of adventure.
- Athletics: See Midland's sports section online for a full schedule and updated photographs.
Lacrosse: The boys' varsity lacrosse team lost to the Thacher Toads in a well played game last Saturday. Although Midland had a difficult time coming up to speed and running with the depth of the Thacher squad, goals were scored by Micah, Marcus, Emmet, Charlie and Peter in the 15-5 loss. It was a great effort by the Oaks. Girls played at Cate, without our juniors, and lost 6-7. The new girls did a good job figuring out positions and playing wherever Coach Laurie Munger asked them to. Scorers included Shaie, with 4 goals, and Ellen and Heidi each with one goal.
