Midlanders Go Camping
9th graders camping
9th graders camping

The 9th graders wrapped up the term with a four day backpacking trip to the 10 acre Midland inholding within the San Rafael Wilderness. The group spent the past few weeks preparing for the trip by creating menus, preparing group gear, practicing knots, learning how to pack their packs and set up tents.

Earlier in February, the sophomores took advantage of being a small and agile class by taking a hard luck camping trip to Oceano Dunes SVRA. The group left after dinner on Saturday for the hour drive to the beach. From there, they drove a couple of miles on the beach before setting up camp.

Emma with Runner

Sunny Pang '14, Emma Lichtwardt '13 and Anna Moiseyeva '13 bravely chose their favored youngsters for 6 weeks of intensive groundwork.  Return to Freedom again generously allowed the use of three young Choctaw mustangs for Midland's unique Foal Training class. Anna worked with Holitopa, a very small three year old filly who was quite naturally inquisitive. Sunny attached herself to tiny Spotted Bird, a year old gelding who had a little bit of handling, but still had much to learn. Emma had a bit of a challenge with Runner, a stocky yearling filly who was friendly, but tentative.  Click here to read more.
Guest Speaker at Midland: Dan Miller Talks About Climate Change
Dan Miller
Dan Miller
On Sunday, February 26, Dan Miller, friend of Midland alumnus Sheafe Ewing '50, gave a fascinating talk on global warming and climate change titled "Boom or Bust? Climate Change Risks and Opportunities." Miller, who invests in green technology companies, spoke of the impending global crisis, presenting hard data to support his view that the future looks bleak unless we do something about it right away. He also showed that awareness of global warming has been around for well over a hundred years but only recently has been taken seriously. Miller held the students' attention for well over an hour and the questions that were posed by them demonstrated that they were engaged and interested.
