- San Francisco Gathering for Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends: Will and Marguerite Graham and Debbie Jones traveled to San Francisco last Friday to host a gathering of 60 Midland alumni/ae, parents and friends. Before turning the evening over to Mr. Graham, John Martin '66 welcomed guests and encouraged all in attendance to go out and share their Midland stories citing personal connections as the school's best link to attracting mission appropriate students and families. As in all Midland gatherings, those in attendance made new friendships and discovered old connections.
- Freshmen Camping Trip: The 9th graders wrapped up the term with a four day backpacking trip to the 10 acre Midland inholding within the San Rafael Wilderness. The group spent the past few weeks preparing for the trip by creating menus, preparing group gear, practicing knots, learning how to pack their packs and set up tents.
- Silent Dinner: Tuesday evening the students (Ammaria Kjos '12, Gillian Beery-Beesley '12, Lily Brand '12, Keenan Blough '13, Max Merkin '13 and Renata Lozito '14) in Marguerite Graham's Mindfulness class gathered in Ireland House to experience a silent meal as part of the Mindfulness elective offered each spring semester. At the completion of the meal, students shared their experiences and observations noting the intensity of flavors, the peacefulness and calm of the evening, and the details they often missed during their meals in Stillman.
- WASC Accreditation Visit: Following the San Francisco gathering last week, Mr. Graham participated as a team member for the WASC accreditation for The Urban School in San Francisco. Derek Harwell '88 used to teach there, and Midland's third Head of School, Carl Munger, was also Head of School at the Urban School. Midland underwent the same accreditation process two years ago.
- Farewell to Foals: Today is the last day the wonderful foals will be at Midland. They will go back to Return to Freedom where they'll be up for adoption. The progress our students made with these three Choctaw Mustangs is remarkable! Great job, Anna, Emma and Sunny!
- Visiting Artist Scott Semple: On Tuesday and Wednesday, Midland was fortunate to have local ceramicist Scott Semple in the Ceramics Studio. Scott specializes in making very large pots - often six feet tall or taller. He demonstrated the process of making a large pot by creating it in sections, while seniors Irvin Alvarez and Callie Bryan assisted in the process and attempted to make their own large pots. He left Midland with a gift of our very own large pot he created during his visit.
- Midland Welcomed Students and Teacher from Mascota: On Sunday, Midland welcomed 7 students and one maestro from "La Prepa" School in Mascota, Mexico. They are being hosted by members of the junior class and will remain with their hosts through Winter Break before returning home. Thank you to the student hosts and to Jose Juan Ibarra '87 for organizing this cultural exchange program!
- Board of Trustees Meeting: This weekend, Midland's Board will meet on campus for one of three board meetings this year. Welcome, Board of Trustees!
- **February Break Travel Plans: Please remember no departures leaving Santa Barbara earlier than 8:00 AM on Saturday, February 18th. Friday evening departure is limited to students whose parents pick them up from Midland. Break begins on Saturday, February 18th. Break ends on Sunday, February 26th. Students must return to Midland and be ready for evening assembly and dinner by 6:00 PM. Thank you!
- Athletics: See Midland's sports section online for a full schedule and updated photographs.
Basketball: The last game of the season was with Cate. Midland lost, 66 - 50. Charlie Lehman '13 and Zach Dib '13 each scored 21 points. Soccer: The Boys' soccer closed its season with a mixed JV/Varsity match at Dunn, a 2-0 victory for the Earwigs, and a 1-0 loss at home to Thacher's JV team. The Oaks finished the season with a varsity record of 3-7-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the Condor League. In JV games, our record was 1-7. On Wednesday, Anacapa School brought a team to Midland for a friendly co-ed scrimmage won by the Islanders, 3-2, despite goals by Charlie Lehman '13, and Ben Cho '13, and help from two of our visiting Mascotans, Luis and Leonardo. Lily Brand '12, put an apparent goal past her younger brother, who was in goal for Anacapa, only to have it nullified by an offside call. Varsity Girls finished with 6 wins and 3 losses. What a season! The girls really came together, they worked hard at playing as a team and playing to their fullest potential. Next year will be exciting - 9 starting seniors will be graduating this year leaving us with a whole new starting team! "I encourage all the kids to continue playing with a soccer ball throughout the year and summer, perhaps even attending soccer summer camps!" - Coach Gillian Kinnear '04.
Spring Sports (competitive sport is Lacrosse) start the week after Winter Break.
- Have a Wonderful Winter Break!!
