- San Francisco Gathering for Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends: Midland's annual Northern California gathering is tonight in San Francisco. There will be a nice, large crowd at this one! Click here to view the invitation.
- Around Campus: What might you see while strolling around campus on a beautiful February afternoon? Students reading with dogs close by, faculty members reading with dogs (and a cat) close by, students and faculty walking, students with work laps working, horses, and of course, stunning Midland scenery.
- Hard Luck Camping for Sophomores: This past weekend, the sophomores took advantage of being a small and agile class by taking a hard luck camping trip to Oceano Dunes SVRA. The group left after dinner on Saturday for the hour drive to the beach. From there, they drove a couple of miles on the beach before setting up camp. S'mores, night bocce, running around on the dunes, some quiet contemplation on the beach, and a visit to the mobile beach store "Banana Cabana" (with tagline: "we've got what you need"). On the way home they took a cultural detour for our Chinese students to have their first ever Denny's experience... none felt ready to try the grand slam breakfast.
- Trail Work: The 9th graders spent last Saturday reworking part of the Bowl Trail. The trail had begun to slump down the hill, so after Anthony Tamaribuchi '15 and Juan Mesones '13 re-cut the trail bed, the 9th graders went out to reinforce the edge using mostly material from the site and reused grape stakes. The trail is getting better and better for hiking and riding both bikes and horses. At the top of the Bowl was found the mythical bike tree, as more and more students are taking advantage of the improving quality of our trails.
- Midlanders Prepare Taxes: Last Sunday, Diego Marcogliese '13, Miles Dakin '13, and teacher, Don Redl, prepared taxes for low-income families in the Santa Ynez Valley through the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). This free program is designed to assist families in filing their income taxes, and with a little luck, lower their effective tax rate below that of Mitt Romney. Charlie Lehman '13 and Micah Kalem '13 will be participating this Sunday as well. Other Midland students are working on their certification and they will volunteer during two Sundays next month.
- Financial Aid: Click here for application directions for new and returning families interested in applying for financial aid for the 2012-2013 school year. The financial aid application deadline is February 15. If you have any questions about the financial aid process, please contact Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, Amy Graham.
- Thacher Came to Camp: On Saturday night, three Thacher students arrived with Dean of Students, Sabina McMahon. They camped at Tank Mesa and then joined us for breakfast. With three Midland students, Phoebe Stokes '12, Ellen Rafferty '12, and Miguel Provencio '13, and Laurie and Ben Munger '79, they drove to Nira Trailhead and hiked down to Midland's property on the Manzana for the night. They returned the next day for a 16 mile round trip. The trip was organized by Thacher senior Joe Bell who along with Laurie planned the trip while up at Golden Trout Camp this past summer. Ben reports, "It was an excellent chance to talk informally about our schools and we all had a good time together. We plan to do another overnight trip into the Sespe behind Thacher in April."
- Midland to Welcome Students from Mascota: On Sunday, Midland will welcome students from "La Prepa" School in Mascota, Mexico. Each year the juniors host students for 2 weeks at Midland, and then during Experiential Week (2 weeks for juniors), they head to Mascota as part of our annual cultural exchange program, led by Jose Juan Ibarra '87.
- Don't Presume Only Teachers Teach!: On Thursday, Celeste Carlisle offered an afternoon of horse riding for faculty members. Cory Cramer bravely took her up on the offer, and enjoyed an afternoon of instruction in the arena from both Celeste, and Sunny Pang '14, enthusiastic member of the Horse Program.
- **February Break Travel Plans: Please remember no departures leaving Santa Barbara earlier than 8:00 AM on Saturday, February 18th. Friday evening departure is limited to students whose parents pick them up from Midland. Break begins on Saturday, February 18th. Break ends on Sunday, February 26th. Students must return to Midland and be ready for evening assembly and dinner by 6:00 PM. Thank you!
- Athletics: See Midland's sports section online for a full schedule and updated photographs.
Basketball: Midland lost to Laguna Blanca on Saturday, 66 to 68. Leading scores for Midland were Charlie Lehman '13 with 13 points, Zach Dib '13 with 25, and Luke Carpenter '12 scored 26. Midland players made 15 three-point shots. Midland defeated Dunn on Wednesday, 47 to 39. Charlie scored 17, Luke had 11 and Zach had 18. Micah Kalem '13 and Kendrick Holmes'12 dominated the boards for Midland. Midland's last game is tonight at Cate. Soccer: The Varsity Boys got a great result in a 0-0 tie with Ojai Valley, a team that had beaten Midland, 5-1, earlier in the season. Goalkeeper Emmet Yeazell '13 had his best match of the year. Wednesday brought the team back down to earth with a 10-0 drubbing at the hands of an excellent Thacher squad. The Oaks close the season out with matches at Dunn on Friday and at home against Thacher's junior varsity on Saturday. It is been a mellow week for the Varsity Girls. They have been practicing juggling and lots of shooting and foot work! Last Saturday Midland beat Ojai Valley, 9-1, with 2 goals from Phoebe Stokes '12 and Kendall Cook '13 scored her first goal of her soccer career! Come support Midland's Varsity Girls this Saturday while they play Cate at home. This is the last game of the season! Go Oaks!
Winter Sports conclude this week. Spring Sports (competitive sport is Lacrosse) start the week after Winter Break.
