- Midland Welcomes Intern Serena Whitridge: This week coming to Midland is a unique 80° experience for an Easterner in the middle of January! Serena Whitridge hails from the Hudson valley region in New York --Stanfordville, NY-- and works at the Hotchkiss School in lovely Lakeville, Connecticut. The purpose of her visit is to explore the Midland Farm and Garden and shadow Katie Isaacson and Ben Munger in hopes to transfer some of the gardening wisdom here to the infancy program that Hotchkiss has just begun.
- San Francisco Gathering for Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends: Midland's annual Northern California gathering will be held on Friday, February 10th. Click here to view the invitation.
- Trustee/School Head Conference: Last weekend, Head of School Will Graham and Trustee Jonathan Andrews '64 attended the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) Trustee/School Head Conference in San Francisco. The annual CAIS Trustee/School Head Conference provides professional development for new and veteran school heads and trustees. Workshops are presented on a wide variety of topics that are vital to the effective governance of independent schools.
- Bows and Arrows: Freshmen in Midland 101 learned how to use an atlatl and a bow and arrow to experience different technologies brought by migrations of peoples from Asia into North America. The atlatl spear shaft was made from Elderberry and the bow was made from Bay Laurel, both plants that students had identified in the hedgerows on the farm for a Midland 102 project map.
- The Family School Purple Door Visits Midland's Horse Program: On Wednesday, January 25th, the Purple Door students and teachers visited Midland's Horse Program for an exercise in observation. After an introduction and brief history of horses in the Barn by Celeste Carlisle, Midland's Horse Program Director, the students headed out to the pasture to observe the horses.
- Spanish Class Treats and Haiku: Students in Jose Juan Ibarra's '87 Spanish classes enjoyed the last day of the first semester by sharing Haiku poems written in Spanish and having some popular Mexican treats.
- Assessment Conference: Last Thursday-Friday, faculty members Faith Nygren, Roddy Taylor, Shawn McVicar, Paul Gelles, Cory Cramer and Derek Harwell '88 traveled to San Diego to attend a conference for teachers about assessment and evaluation of students.

- Straw Mulch: On Wednesday, Ben Munger '79, Katie Isaacson, Garden Intern Serena Whitridge and students Lalo Rodriguez '15, Savannah Bryant '12 and Wallis Cooley '15 spread straw mulch over the garlic in the Garden to help keep moisture in the soil and to prevent weeds.
- Story Time at Midland's Library for The Family School Green Door: On Wednesday, January 25th, students and teachers from The Family School's Green Door came to Midland for Story Time in the Library. Michelle Bone, Midland's Librarian, read "Yo, Vikings!" to the group, and then everyone enjoyed some cocoa outside.
- Green Schools Alliance Conference: On Saturday, January 21st, Communications Director Karen Readey and students India Salter '13, Omavi Quadir '14 and Talei Cody '15 went to the Fourth Annual Regional Green Schools Alliance Conference held at Besant Hill School in Ojai. This is a conference that continues to inspire fresh perspectives, vision, connections and relationship.

Basketball: Midland lost to Thacher on Saturday, 53 - 89. Luke Carpenter '12 had 24 points, and Charlie Lehman '13 had 15 points. Midland lost to Providence Hall on Wednesday, 51 - 71. Luke had 21 points.
Soccer: What a great game in an even greater season! The Varsity girls played a very smart and intentional game on Wednesday against Cate. They won 4-0, with goals from Savannah Cooley '12, Ellen Rafferty '12 and two from Lily Brand '12. Gabriella Rocco '14 made her first appearance in that game. The whole team played an amazing game, making smart passes and keeping good control of the ball. Keep it up girls!
The boys' soccer team took a pounding this week, losing 6-0 at Thacher and 4-0 to Cate's junior varsity to fall to 4-6 overall. The Oaks travel to Laguna Blanca on Saturday before hosting Dunn next Wednesday.
