MIDLAND MINUTES
  • MLK Day at Midland: On Monday, January 16, 2012, Midland School celebrated and honored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with Damali Ayo, Author, Artist and Speaker. Damali presented "I (You) Can Fix Racism," and engaged Midland faculty and students and shared concrete steps for overcoming racial oppression. During Sunday evening's Chapel, Jose Juan Ibarra '87 shared his personal story about being Mexican, and growing up and living as an adult in a predominantly White community. Following, several students read other anonymous personal accounts to open the conversations about race and diversity. 
  • San Francisco Gathering for Alumni/ae, Parents and Friends: Midland's annual Northern California gathering will be held on Friday, February 10th. Click here to view the invitation. 
  • Stock Portfolio Luncheon: Last Friday, the Rotary Club of Solvang hosted a luncheon to honor local teams that participated in the club's annual Stock Portfolio contest. Each of the top teams from participating schools were invited. Oliver Rothenberg '15 and Anthony Tamaribuchi '15 represented Midland at the luncheon. Their team, Occupy, led the competition until the final week and they finished third overall in the high school division. Congratulations to Oliver and Anthony on their accomplishment!   
  • Foal Training Class BeginsThe foals have arrived! Sunny Pang '14, Emma Lichtwardt '13 and Anna Moiseyeva '13 have bravely chosen their favored youngsters for 6 weeks of intensive groundwork. Return to Freedom has again generously allowed the use of three young Choctaw mustangs for Midland's unique class.      
  • ISEEN Institute: Last week, Director of Environmental Programs Lise Goddard attended the 2012 Independent Schools Experiential Education Network Institute at Hotchkiss School in Connecticut.  ISEEN was created by a group of independent school adventure program directors who realized that there could be great benefit from increased networking and idea sharing with other adventure educators working within the unique environment of independent schools.   
  • Financial AidClick here  for application directions for new and returning families interested in applying for financial aid for the 2012-2013 school year. The financial aid application deadline is February 15. If you have any questions about the financial aid process, please contact Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, Amy Graham.   
  • Classic Songs, "Midland Style": If you missed the debut of the "Midland Style" songs rewritten by Paul Gelles and Lise Goddard at Midland's Thanksgiving this year, you can view the lyrics on Midland's website.        
  • UCSB Lecture: On Tuesday evening, Donna Williams and Common Ground Service Club members Shaie Gold '12, Becca Rantanen '12 and Lily Brand '12 attended a Lecture on Human Rights by Samantha Nutt, Founder and Executive Director of War Child, at UCSB's Capps Center for the Study of Ethics, Religion, and Public Life.

    Basketball: Besant Hill defeated Midland on Friday, 70 to 56. Leading scorers for Midland were Luke Carpenter '12 with 31 points, Charlie Lehman '13 with 10, and Kendrick Holmes '12 with 11.  Cate defeated Midland on Saturday,  75 to 54, and pacing Midland were Luke with 31 points, and Zac Dib '13 with 11.  On Wednesday, Orcutt Academy defeated Midland, 81 to 71. Luke scored 26 points, Charlie with 19, Zac with 11, and Micah Kalem ' 13 with 10. Midland Plays Thacher on Saturday.  

    Soccer: Varsity girls are on a roll!  Having won the last three games, the girls are playing at the top of their game. Last Saturday they played Thacher, where they won 3-1. Danica Davis '12 scored 2 goals and Ellen Rafferty '12 scored 1. It was a great game, and the girls played exceptionally well. The game was also Nayana Hummingbird's '15 debut game. She played extremely well and has now become a full time Varsity member.  Wednesday's game was against San Luis Obispo High. Danica scored a goal within 30 seconds of the game starting. The game was a battle between two great teams. By the second half the teams were tied, 1-1.  With just 10 minutes left in the game, Midland scored 2 more goals, and only let one in.  Midland finished the game with a 3-2 victory.  The next game is Saturday against Ojai Valley.     The Varsity boys lost, 4-1, to Orcutt, despite Dan Brownstein '13, scoring his second goal of the season, and then fell, 8-0, to Cate, a team ranked among the top 20 for all schools in California. The Oaks bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Besant Hill on Wednesday on the strength of goals by two freshmen, Sean Cummings and Bryce Bryant. The team is 4-4 overall.
