  • Project Healthy Neighbors: This year marked the third year in a row where Midland students and faculty members volunteered at Project Healthy Neighbors in Santa Barbara.  Organized by Ken Williams, father of Shane Williams '12, the project provided hundreds of people outside the Casa Esperanza shelter in Santa Barbara with clothing, flu shots, tuberculosis screenings, drug and alcohol counseling and even dental care, and helped the homeless prepare for winter weather.
  • Leather Belt Making: On Thursday, Celeste Carlisle, Gillian Kinnear '04 and Karen Readey along with freshmen Talei McCloud, Anthony Tamaribuchi, Emma Dreyfuss, Turner Schroth, Nayana Hummingbird, Jordan Swidenbank and Wallis Cooley went to saddle maker Juan Lara's shop in Santa Ynez and made leather belts with guidance from Juan and Alberto. A large sheet of leather was cut into strips, sponged with water and then buffed in preparation for working with it.  The students then stamped designs onto their belts, oiled them, and polished them with a leather conditioner.

Cross CountryLast Saturday, the Boys Cross Country team represented Midland in the Southern Sectional Prelims at Mt. SAC.  The team was placed into one of four heats based on its performance over the season.  The boys had a great race, but they were just short of their goal of moving on to the Southern Section Finals.  Overall they were in eighteenth place and needed to be in the top sixteen to advance.  Leading the team was Charlie Lehman '13 with a time of 16:16 and a 12th place finish in his heat, followed by Peter King '12 (16:38), Juan Mesones '13 (17:04), Marcus Schmidt '12 (17:13), Dan Brownstein '13 (17:39), Emmet Yeazell '13 (17:49), and Miguel Provencio '13 (17:58). This was probably the fastest team representing Midland at Mt. SAC with all seven runners coming in under 18 minutes.  Captains Peter King and Marcus Schmidt helped to make this one of the most unified and motivated teams as well.  The boys had a great season taking 2nd in the Condor League and they should be very proud of their accomplishments this year.
