MIDLAND MINUTES

  • Gathering for Current Parents: All current parents are invited to a Parent Gathering on Friday evening, November 25th from 6-9 PM. Click here to view the invitation.
  • Save Money on Car Insurance: No, this is not an advertisement!  Catherine Cooley (mother of Savannah '12) shared that you can get a discount on insurance if you send proof of your child's residency at Midland to your car insurance provider. With proof of your child being away most of the time, when he/she returns home on break, your child does not have to be added back as an active driver because he/she will have "permissive use," just as if a friend were using the car occasionally.
  • Guest Speaker Program: Each year, the Midland community invites guest speakers to campus who share their experiences and knowledge on an impressive array of topics. Click here to see this year's list of guest speakers, organized by Paul Gelles.
  • Midland's Board of Trustees: This weekend, Midland's Board will meet on campus for one of three board meetings this year. Welcome, Board of Trustees!
  • Outdoor Leadership to Joshua Tree: Outdoor Leadership took their final trip of the fall season, a four day adventure in Joshua Tree National Park.  The group encountered rain, wind, and cold temperatures, all of which they were prepared for with everyone staying warm and dry throughout. Derek Harwell '88 states, "The benefit of braving the challenging conditions is that it deterred many other potential visitors such that we felt like we had the place to ourselves." Faculty member Cory Cramer was also on the trip along with freshmen Claire Conlon, Talei McCloud, Anthony Tamaribuchi, Bryce Bryant, Cole Lucas, Cody Radlick, Oliver Rothenberg and senior Kendrick Holmes. • Stock Portfolio Contest: Under the advisement of Don Redl and Larry Edwards of Montecito Bank & Trust, several Midland students are participating in the Solvang Rotary Club's Stock Portfolio Contest for SYV Schools. The Midland teams are Aku '15 and Ezi Nwakanma '15, Oliver Rothenberg '15 and Anthony Tamaribuchi '15, and Diego Marcogliese '13, Micah Kalem '13 and Miles Dakin '13. They meet each Thursday and compete with teams of all ages in the valley.  The contest ends on December 23rd, and the team with the highest portfolio "market value" will be declared the winner and will receive a trophy.
  • A Midland Assembly: Midland's School Prefects (Savannah Bryant and Marcus Schmidt this year) run our daily assemblies. See a short video of a Midland assembly.
  • Riding in the Ring: Sunny Pang '14, Miles Dakin '13, Anna Moiseyeva '13, Jordan Swidenbank '15, Heidi Ohms '15, Nayana Hummingbird '15, and Turner Schroth '15 have been busily improving their riding and horsemanship skills these last weeks of Fall Horses. Half halts are being perfected, quiet hands and solid seats are coming along nicely, transitions are becoming smoother, and overall balance and confidence are easily seen in this fantastic group of riders. Our schedule got away from us this season, so look for a later-than-usual Fall Horses Camping Trip this winter!
  • Marine Biology Field Trip: Jeff and Lise Goddard took Midland's Marine Biology class to the Morro Bay mudflats on Tuesday afternoon. While the focus was on the burrowing infaunal invertebrates of this incredible habitat, students are always impressed by the nature of the mud itself, and they must learn to skate across its surface using both feet to keep from sinking into its hold.  Highlights included seeing several remarkably large California sea hares, ghost shrimp, and banks of mud snails parasitized by flatworms; they look like snails and act like snails, but once parasitized, will spend the rest of their lives producing flatworms rather than baby snails.
  • Horse Clinic Visit: Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center delivers state of the art veterinary care to Santa Ynez Valley's horses. Fall riders took a field trip to visit the clinic in November.
  • Athletics: See Midland's sports section online for a full schedule and updated photographs.
