- Midland Welcomes New Student: Eduardo "Lalo" Rodriguez arrived on campus with his parents, on Sunday, October 30, from Guanajuato, Mexico. He is Mexican-American and English is his second language. Welcome, Lalo!
- Guest Speaker: On Sunday evening, Bill Poett gave a great talk in front of the whole school. Bill is the son of a Midland alum, and brother and father of other alums. Since 1988, Bill has studied, taught and trained with military, law enforcement, and corporate performance experts throughout the United States and Asia. As a master martial arts and close-quarter combat instructor, Bill offers a unique perspective when working with individuals and teams for whom peak performance is literally a matter of life and death. From the battlefield to boardroom, from the playing field to the family room, Bill has developed easy-to-learn and apply tools for one's personal pathway to joy and success.
- Faculty Fall Break Update: Faculty member Faith Nygren greeted faculty members Derek '88 and Emily Harwell, Cory Cramer and Kate Fox and Kate's brother as they stopped at Dos Pueblos when they kayaked from Gaviota to Santa Barbara during break.
- Librarian of Congress: During the October break Jim Billington, a friend and neighbor from the Santa Ynez Valley, brought his father, the US Librarian of Congress Dr. James Hadley Billington, to meet Head of School Will Graham and tour Midland School. Appointed by President Ronald Reagan, Dr. Billington serves as the head of the world's largest library, however, his interest in Midland stretches beyond the confines of our fine collection. - Halloween 2011: This year, we celebrated Halloween on Tuesday, November 1st. Click here to see photos.
- Double Pie Day: On Wednesday, for the fourth straight year, Michael Kidd (parent to Evan '11 and Alexis '08) and BG Kresse '68 put on "Double Pie Day" where BG makes pizza pies for dinner, and Michael Kidd provides pies for dessert. It became a tradition when Evan was on the cross country team and his dad brought pie for him and teammates following the final cross country meet. Michael donated 25 pies for the school! Thank you!
- Barbed Wire be Gone! Horses and barbed wire are not a particularly suited pair, oftentimes getting tangled up with each other or otherwise troubled. Slow replacement of barbed wire fence lines in horse pastures has begun!
- NatureTrack's First Adventure at Midland: NatureTrack, a new local non-profit organization that "provides outdoor field trips for Central Coast school-aged children where curriculum is aligned with grade-appropriate state mandated standards", had its first field trip to Midland School on Thursday, November 3.
- Ian Cummings to Perform: Faculty member Ian Cummings will be performing the first two weekends in November in an evening of two original one acts by local writer Gerald DiPego.

Girls' Volleyball: JV had a very exciting match against Dunn on Wednesday. Coach Paul Gelles says, "After they beat us badly in the first game, we came back strong and took the second game. This forced a third game to 15, and an exciting game it was. With some excellent serving by Leah Kaplan '13, Lupe Valle '15, Hanqi Ran '13 and Eziaku Nwakanma '15, Midland came from behind, 13-9, to tie it at 13, then went ahead to 14. Dunn tied it at 14, Midland went ahead to 15, but then lost 17 to 15. The girls had some awesome rallies!" Varsity played Dunn and won the first game then lost the next 3: 25-21, 25-18, 25-18. Both JV and Varsity play Besant Hill on Saturday. Cross Country: On Wednesday, nearly 150 runners from the Condor League ran on Midland's course for the league finals.
For the third year in a row, the Girls Cross Country team placed third overall in the league ahead of OVS and Laguna Blanca. Phoebe Stokes '12 led the team with a ninth place overall finish followed by Selena Wrightson '13 (16th place) and Lily Brand '12 (22nd place). Rounding out the top five runners, Anna Moiseyeva '13 and Gabriella Rocco '14 pushed each other throughout course and both girls finished strong.
Charlie Lehman '13 led the Boys Cross Country team with a third place finish overall followed by Peter King '12 (6th place), Marcus Schmidt '12 (9th place), Juan Mesones '13 (12th place) and Daniel Brownstein '13 (17th place). This is the first year where three boys have placed in the top ten. In the overall standings, the team placed second in the league for the third year in a row, and they will be advancing to the CIF Southern Section Prelims at Mt. SAC on November 12th.
