9th Grade Camping Trip: On Saturday, the 9th graders headed out on their first "hard luck" camping trip to "Grassy Knolls." The group left after dinner with packs and headlamps, laughing and singing their way up the hill. Students spent the evening learning about stars and the phases of the moon before some solo journal time to reflect upon the culmination of their first month as a Midland student. In the morning, the group rose to watch the sunrise and hike down to campus for a breakfast of eggs and pancakes.
Geology Trip: Laurie Munger and her Geology class students traveled from Midland through the Cuyama Valley, across the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, over the end of the Sierra Nevada by Tehachapi, and up HWY 395 to Mono lake. Laurie says, "Two high points were our stop at Fossil Falls - a river sculpted basalt flow with huge plunge pools, resembling swiss cheese, and steep cliff faces, and our hike into Panum Crater where we observed obsidian and pumice flows. Camping was enjoyed by all."
Surf's Up: With temperatures into the triple digits, students took refuge with back to back days at the beach. On Wednesday, Outdoor Leadership students headed down to Refugio for their third surf session of the school year. Everyone had a great time playing in the waves on a mix of surf boards and boogie boards. Claire caught a number of great waves, while Cole caught his first wave ever and got up!
On Thursday, faculty members Paul, Cory, and Derek returned to the beach with a mix of surfers and those just looking for relief from the heat. All the surfers got several waves and hooted each other into the crashing rollers. It was a beautiful fall afternoon and everyone enjoyed it greatly. And the food on the way home never tasted better! Awooh!
Bioneers Conference: Faculty member Lise Goddard will attend the Bioneers Conference in Marin this weekend with students Savannah Bryant '12, Savannah Cooley '12 and Shayla Gold '12, along with moms Catherine Cooley and Christine Gordon. On Wednesday, the Boys Cross Country team also ran in the Condor League meet at Cate. Charlie Lehman '13 led the team with a 3rd place finish just three seconds behind the lead runners. Peter King '12 followed with a 5th place finish, then Marcus Schmidt '12 with an 8th place finish, and Juan Mesones '13 finished in 11th. Dan Brownstein '13 closed out the top five in 21st. With those strong results, Midland took second place in the league with a solid 47 to 95 victory against Cate.
